I'm not a security/cybersecurity analyst, so I can't speak to a day in the life of a security analyst. However, I'll point you to www.glassdoor.com (or you can look at job sites like Indeed and others that will have this information). What does a Security Analyst do?
As an Information Security Analyst, you will design and implement IT security systems to protect the organization's computer networks from cyber attacks. You will also help develop organization wide best practices for IT security. You will monitor computer networks for security issues, install security software and document all security issues or breaches you find.
An ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in computer science with a minimum of 3 years of experience in information security. You need to be proficient with MAC and OS with experience in penetration testing and techniques and installing security software and documenting security issues. In addition, you will have excellent written and oral communication skill and understand patch management and firewalls, antivirus and IDPS concepts.
What responsibilities are common for Security Analyst jobs?
Install security measures and operate software
Upgrade systems to enable security software
Install and upgrade antivirus software
Test and evaluate new technology
Perform penetration testing
Analyze IT requirements and provide objective advice on the use of IT security requirements

I manage teams that include Information Security Analysts and have worked in these roles in the past.
This title can be a bit of a generic catch-all for entry-level information security roles so the day-to-day responsibilities can still vary a lot between different roles with that title. That said, there are a lot of similarities and core skills that most of these jobs will share.
- All of these roles will require some technical experience and the ability to understand and speak about some aspect of computer technology.
- Most of these roles will require an understanding of vulnerabilities or risks related to the specific technology and an ability to discuss and explain issues you have found
- Most of these roles will be in mid-to-large size companies, and you will be working with larger, decentralized IT teams (smaller companies usually have less dedicated security staff)
In entry level security roles you will usually have a pretty narrow focus. Something like processing a configuration audits for a specific technologies (like network routers or newly developed code) or monitoring and responding to alerts from monitoring systems. In most cases you will do much of your work on a computer, with incidents or tickets assigned to you by a manager or a ticketing system. You will then use the appropriate tools and standards documents to perform your process, reach a conclusion, and write up findings or conclusions.
