what would be the best way to find good work in Technical Theater?

I know theater tech might be a hard line of work to find a good job in, what would be a good way to work around that problem?

Get lots of behind stage experience, apply for internships and volunteer opportunities at theater festivals and local theaters. Most of my successful, professional theater tech friends went to college for it. One went to William & Mary and I knew a couple others from Northwestern Unv. Others who just do it as a side hustle were in their college’s drama club and found a passion for tech theater.

Find ways to work with your hands and technology. Join wood shop or classes like that, where you get to work on projects and use a variety of tools. If your school has a theater department, ask about helping out backstage or in the light/sound booth, or shadowing the stage manager. Your school should have folks that help set up audio and other things for assemblies and events - ask if you can volunteer to assist them. If you have a a chance to learn about anything related to preparing for a live event, lights, sound, etc, take it.

Not only will this give you a diverse set of experiences and skill, you’ll get to see if this something you really want to pursue. Best of luck!
