Daniel’s Answer

Keilani this is a great question! Business is fantastic since there are so many career paths that you could take. My first piece of advice is try out some different fields in business such as:

1. Operations
2. Finance
3. Sales
4. Marketing
5. Human Resources

I decided to go into Business Operations since operations touches almost every facet of the organization. I enjoy the different challenges and operations also gives me the flexibility to try new things. Another great aspect about operations is they usually support the other divisions of an organization. Since, there are many divisions of an company if you do not enjoy one area its not a big deal since you can support other areas of the business.

Many larger companies will start you in a rotational analyst program. By doing this you will get to see usually 2-4 different sections of the business. Companies offer this to not only help you hone in on your career path but many companies have realized that if there employees actually enjoy their job they will get better overall performance.

Over the next few summers I would intern at some different companies and try out multiple business fields to help you narrow down your passions in business. Hope this helps and good luck on the journey!

Patty’s Answer

Hi Keilani! One of the things I've appreciated about my career in business is that I was able to try very different things. I started out in accounting when I first graduated from university -- I was an auditor and eventually received my CPA. However I decided wanted to spend more time focused on people related things -- development (training & coaching), recruiting talent, challenging team dynamics... instead of technical accounting matters. I transferred to Human Resources and was able to work in areas that ultimately provided me with more satisfaction and joy. There are so many different areas under the giant umbrella of business from highly technical to very creative!

Your curiosity will serve you well -- best of luck to you!

Sergio’s Answer

Hi Keilani,
I think Business is a great option and gives you a lot of flexibility depending on what your preferences are. You can choose a certain industry that you like (IT, Automotive, Hospitality) and also as mentioned above you can touch many different areas that aren't exclusive among them. You can choose to specialize in one of them or move around two or more.
There is great advice and inside to some of the areas from the above comments. I can tell you that it is very broad and that even within the same function, you will see big differences among the different areas. In Finance you can have extremely structured and process-oriented jobs as well as very creative and uncertain environments.
Hope that helps you. All the best!

Hi Keilani. I think this a great question. Business is a very versatile career path, in which the skillset you gain from that degree can be applied to a wide range of jobs/passions. Like the above section, there are a few different sections when it comes to business. I received my degree in both Marketing & Global Supply Chain. This gave me insight into both the creative side of my mind & the process-oriented side as well. I enjoy utilizing both sides of my brain, so this was a great opportunity in project management. I think Daniel above gave a great insight into starting in a rotational program because you get to learn about different segments of the business and potentially see different locations. The best thing to do is learn by doing and overtime, you will figure out what you are passionate about. I learned what I did not like to do by trying out different segments of business. In college, I interned in wealth management, insurance, student teaching, consulting, and more. These experiences opened my eyes to what aspects of each industry I really liked and other aspects I did not. Hope this helps!
