What are some of the essential classes that helped you prepare for your career?

This is a very good question. For undergrad I was a business major. In that particular major I had a lot of math and writing classes. This was very helpful when I decided to apply to law school. However, you do not need a particular major to apply for law school.
The very first year of law school you will take Civil Procedure, Torts, Contracts, Property, Criminal law, Constitutional Law, and Legal research and Writing (this class can be called a few different names based on the law school that you attend). These classes will encompass your first year of law school and these are basically your base classes and introduction to law school. Once you get passed these required classes which is you 1st year of law school; as a 2nd and 3rd year law student you can make the decision to take more of the "bar classes" or more classes that interest you. This again can vary based on the law school you attend.
I currently work as a contract manager in technology in house (which means not working at a law firm) in the legal department for a corporation. While I am finishing law school. I can say that my most helpful classes in law school has been contracts, property, and civil procedure. These classes have help me greatly as I navigate through this legal world.

Good question. The essential classes that helped me prepare for my career were the required classes during law school. Every law student must pass the following classes: Contracts, Torts, Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law and Procedure, Legal Research & Writing, and Property Law.
Depending on what type of lawyer you want to become ... you may have to take specific classes in undergrad. For example, if you want to become a Patent Attorney you may be required to earn an undergrad degree in engineering or science.
To help you decide what area of law you're most interested in you should first look within yourself. Decide the area of law you want to practice. Once you confirm your own personal interest, then research to see if that particular area of law requires you to take special classes or obtain a special degree before law school.
