How many general education hours are required?
How many hours do you have to take before declaring a major?

I would suggest looking at the college's course catalog. It not only lists all of the courses that are available, but will also likely say which courses are gen-eds and how many you will need to take. If it doesn't explicitly say "you need this many gen-ed credit hours," you can also look under a specific major you may be interested in; oftentimes they will have a "four-year plan" for students to follow, and it will almost always list the amount of gen-ed credit hours needed, you might just have to do a little math. Also, if you have a hard time figuring out, don't be afraid to shoot a quick phone call to the guidance office. These phone calls take only a few minutes, and you will have your answer right away. This varies between schools and between majors. Some schools require you to declare a major from the start of your classes. Some classes require that you have a certain major before taking them.

It is best to declare a major first year even if you have to change later. Look for classes you want to take later and make sure you have taken the prerequisites.
It would be a shame to be one or two classes away from graduation and be held up by a class you can't take until you have the prerequisite.
