How can I fundraise professionally?

I was offered a scholarship to attend the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders, but it only offers tuition. I will be responsible for paying for my transportation, as well as another conference prior to this. I would appreciate advice for asking for funding from classmates/local businesses/online. I can't rely on my family so I would like to make this as professional as possible. Thank you in advance!

Congrats on getting the scholarship!


I don't necessarily know the answer to your question. I would think you could write letters (not e-mails!) to people in the community. I would focus on women in leadership positions. Were I to receive such a letter, I would want to know how much is not covered by the scholarship, and what part of that you are planning personally to contribute. You should tell me a little about your education and career ambitions. Just a little. Keep it short. Lengthy letters don't get read! Show respect for the recipient's time. Also, thank them for taking the time to read the letter, and for their consideration.


I'm not sure if you should provide a means of making payment (here's my paypal account information sounds tacky, to me), or simply include your mailing address on the letter, and they can mail a donation if they so choose. Or, they can contact you if they wish to make an electronic donation.


I would not approach fellow students seeking donations. They usually don't have surplus funds.

Congratulations! I would contact any alumni groups for organizations that you participate, and this includes your school or University. There are often people that are interested in an "Angel" sponsorship like this but do not advertise it. Typically the Executive Director or Development officer will know of these people and can connect you. Also, look at Women in Business or Women in Leaders membership organizations. They may also have scholarship opportunities to help cover such expense.

Hi! I would consider crafting a brief document about what your goals are and how attending the conference will help you achieve your goals.

Bryan recommends the following next steps:

Next step is build a list of all the folks who love and support you (name and e-mail address).
Build our a compelling GoFundMe (or similar campaign).
Make sure some of your guaranteed funders are ready to donate before you make the campaign live. More will donate as they see others have.
Post about the campaign in social media re-iterating how much this funding will help you achieve your goals.
Follow up directly with folks asking for their support and thanking all your supporters. This takes confidence, but afterall, this is your goals/dreams we're talking about.
