Hello, Alicia !
It's great that you are thinking about becoming a model and there is so much to learn before you'll be ready to be in the business. Most young people ask how can they start, but not everyone's circumstances are the same. You will need training and experience and there's no telling how long it will take before you've learned enough to be versatile and have a grounded, realistic mindset about the industry.
I'm glad that your parents are supportive of your wanting to be a model because since you are under 18, one or both of your parents will have to oversee every step of your training (and pay for it) and accompany you for all of your "go sees", interviews and projects that you work on. You will also need the financial means for photo shoots for your portfolio, a wardrobe, make up, and someone is going to have to drive you everywhere. These are just some of the things to keep in mind before you start training.
If you want to get some experience, you can arrange to do fashion shows at your school or any other places that would be receptive to having a fashion show at their business. Ask us detailed questions about how to do this. Everyone takes different steps to get to the level of professional modeling.
Modeling School is an important piece of the journey. There is one Modeling School in Santa Rosa, the Julie Nation Academy. Let your parent know this is their website https://www.julienation.com/contactus Do keep in mind that, in general, not everyone that applies to Modeling School gets accepted. Have your parent make the initial contact for you. They have a pre-teen and Teen Modeling Program. I am impressed with their program because they teach all the very important and needed subjects to become a professional model.
Please do NOT put yourself on social media as a model. I won't go into detail here, but there are great risks and social media is NOT a Model platform. You will learn all the correct ways to get work as a model when you are in Modeling School.
So that's about it for now. Get experience doing modeling at your junior high or high school and in the community and apply to Modeling School. From there, you will have direction and guidance.
I wish you all the best in your unique journey to becoming a Model !

Hello Alicia
Good start! It’s great that you are already taking the right steps by asking questions. Starting a modeling career can feel overwhelming, but with focus and dedication, you can make it happen. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started:
Step 1: Decide What Type of Modeling Suits You
Modeling has many paths, like runway, commercial, print, fitness, or even niche markets like hand modeling. Think about your strengths and what excites you the most. For example:
• Runway: Taller models with strong poses.
• Catalog: Catalog models represent a variety of looks, body types, and ages to match diverse consumer markets.
• Commercial: Relatable looks for ads and campaigns.
• Fitness: Athletic physique for activewear or sports brands.
Step 2: Build Your Portfolio
• Your portfolio is your resume in the modeling world.
• Start with professional photos: Invest in a photographer who can help create a mix of headshots, full-body shots, and styled looks.
• If you can’t afford professional photos right now, start with high-quality pictures taken by a friend or at home photoshoot.
Step 3: Research and Reach Out to Agencies
• Look for reputable modeling agencies in your area. Some trusted ones include Elite, IMG, and Ford Models, but local agencies are great starting points too.
• Red flags to avoid: Legit agencies don’t ask for upfront fees or make unrealistic promises.
• Many agencies hold open calls or accept online applications, so check their websites for details.
Step 4: Use Social Media to Showcase Yourself
Instagram is a powerful tool in the modeling world. Share professional looking photos, behind the scenes shots, and your personality. Use hashtags like ModelSearch or AspiringModel to get noticed by scouts.
Step 5: Start Small to Gain Experience
Look for small opportunities like influencer programs, small fashion shows or collaborations with photographers. Trade-for-print (TFP) shoots can help you build your portfolio while networking.
The Good and the Challenging
The Good:
Modeling is creative, exciting, and offers chances to travel and meet new people. It can open doors to other industries, like acting or brand endorsements.
The Challenges:
It’s a competitive field that requires patience you might face rejection, long hours, or demanding schedules, but staying confident and focused will help you push through.
Step 6: Stay Healthy and Confident
Modeling requires confidence and self-care. Maintain a healthy lifestyle, but don’t feel pressured to fit unrealistic standards. Embrace your unique look it’s what makes you stand out.
Lastly it's a very important thing to consider. As a teen, you will need your parents approval to start modeling, especially for signing contracts. They will also help navigate labor laws, which limit how many hours you can work and the type of work you can do. Start by talking to your parents, doing some research on teen modeling laws, and then look for reputable agencies. Stay safe and be careful. Modeling takes patience and, but with your passion and dedication, you can go far. Take it one step at a time.
hope this helps.
Best of luck!

Getting your parents’ approval is a crucial step in pursuing a teen modelling career Rebecca. This is a step you cannot escape, to become a teen model, it requires your parent’s or legal guardian’s permission if you are under the age of 18.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
As an industry laser-focused on looks, modeling can be fraught with issues, especially when models start at younger, more impressionable ages. Before seeking out that first gig, you and your parents/guardians should discuss the pros and cons of the industry and the amount of time and dedication necessary to succeed. Parents/ guardians are often the first line of defense against scams, mental and physical stress, and other problems that may arise, so everyone is prepared to help you navigate the potential issues of teen modeling. That’s not to say it isn’t extremely important to protect your child’s mental health and general well-being; it's important you do your research as rejection is very real part of the modelling industry. It’s down to the parents/guardians to help you decide whether a career in modelling is worth pursuing.
SOMETIMES THE ANSWER IS NO
Teen modeling is a competitive industry with a large number of aspiring models. This can make it challenging to stand out and secure consistent work. You will have to deal with rejection and criticism… Models often face rejection and criticism during casting calls and when also applying to agencies. It requires resilience, a strong sense of self-esteem and confidence. If you are rejected over and over again, that doesn’t mean that modeling is not for you. You simply may not be the right fit for the casting and the agencies and not forgetting that the crateria of agencies are based on the requirements of their clients.
Modelling can be great fun and introduce you to lots of new people, just remember to be safe.

Hey Alicia! 🌟
First off, YES to starting a modeling career! If people have been telling you you’ve got the look, it sounds like you’re already halfway there! Now let’s talk about how to turn this into something real (and fun, because who said getting into modeling can’t be a blast?). You’re in for a wild, glamorous ride ahead, so let’s break this down:
Step 1: Assess the Modeling Scene
The world of modeling has a lot of facets, so the first step is figuring out what kind of modeling suits you best. Since you mentioned high-fashion, you’re looking at working with designer brands and fashion shows, which usually involve runway work, photoshoots for magazines, and more.
However, there are other modeling categories too:
1. Commercial Modeling – Think ads, catalogs, TV commercials.
2. Print Modeling – For magazines, brochures, billboards, etc.
3. Fitness/Swimwear Modeling – Think of the beach and looking fabulous while doing squats! 🏖️
4. Plus-Size Modeling – Embracing all body types in the industry!
5. Freelance Modeling – This allows you to take control of your work and work with different photographers directly.
Figure out where your interests and strengths align—then boom, you’re off to the races! 🏁
---
Step 2: Build Your Portfolio
A portfolio is like your business card—but better because it shows off your best self! Here’s how to get one:
Find a good photographer: Ask around for recommendations, or check online for reputable photographers who do work with teen models.
Start with test shoots: These are practice photoshoots where the photographer and you work together to create some stunning images. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different looks, poses, and styles.
Have a variety of photos: Get some headshots, full-body shots, action shots, and creative photos. The more diverse, the better!
Pro tip: Try not to get overwhelmed by over-editing your pictures. Keep things natural so you look as close to real life as possible!
---
Step 3: Get Some Experience and Exposure
Now that you have your photos, it’s time to put them to work!
1. Look for local modeling agencies: Some agencies will work with teens and help you get those big breaks. Start local, and then you can expand your network as you get more experience.
2. Freelance Modeling: If you’re not quite ready for an agency, start reaching out to photographers or brands to do shoots on your own. Don’t be afraid to send a nice email introduction with your portfolio attached.
3. Social Media: Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are your modeling launchpads. Create a page dedicated to your modeling journey and share your best work. Tons of agencies and brands scout for fresh talent this way!
---
Step 4: Learn the Industry Basics
The modeling world isn’t just about looking pretty (okay, well... mostly). It’s also about being professional, reliable, and knowledgeable:
Learn to pose: Go ahead and watch YouTube tutorials on how to pose—whether it’s for photos or runway shows. The more you practice, the better you’ll get!
Walk the walk: If runway modeling is your thing, practicing your catwalk at home is essential! Think confidence, smooth moves, and feeling fabulous as you strut. 🕺💃
Work on your communication: Modeling involves a lot of collaboration, whether it’s with photographers, designers, or brands. Having good communication skills will help you stand out in this field.
---
Step 5: Stay Healthy and Confident
Take care of your skin, hair, and health: You want to be the best version of yourself—so stay healthy, eat well, and get enough sleep! 💪
Confidence is your secret weapon: You’re already ahead of the game by recognizing your potential. Keep that self-assurance high, because the more confident you are in your look and abilities, the more others will see that too. You are your best asset, after all.
---
Step 6: Patience + Persistence = Success
Here’s the big truth: It’s not a "get famous quick" job. The modeling world is competitive, and it takes time. The key is to stick with it, keep learning, and most importantly—have fun along the way. Enjoy the photoshoots, the runway practices, and the connections you’ll make.

Hi Alicia,
It’s exciting that you’re thinking about modeling! Starting as a teen can feel overwhelming, but with the right steps, you can set yourself up for success. Here’s how you can get started:
1. Understand the Industry
- Research the different types of modeling: fashion, commercial, runway, print, fitness, or niche modeling (like petite, plus-size, or parts modeling).
- Decide which area fits your look, personality, and interests.
2. Build Confidence and Skills
- Practice posing in front of a mirror or take simple photos with a friend or family member.
- Watch modeling tutorials on platforms like YouTube to learn how to walk, pose, and express emotions through your face.
- Confidence is key—practice makes perfect!
3. Start with a Portfolio
- Your portfolio is like a résumé for models. It doesn’t have to be fancy when you’re just starting out.
- What to include in your portfolio:
- A headshot: Clear, natural photo with little to no makeup.
- A full-body shot: Show your posture and proportions.
- A profile (side) shot.
- A casual outfit and a clean, fitted outfit to show versatility.
4. Find a Reputable Agency
- Look for legitimate modeling agencies in your area or online. Some well-known ones include Ford Models, Elite Model Management, and IMG.
- Check their websites for “open calls” or online submissions. Legit agencies never ask for upfront fees or require you to pay for expensive photoshoots.
5. Attend Open Calls or Submit Online
- Agencies often host open casting calls where you can walk in and meet them.
- If submitting online, follow their specific instructions carefully (usually a few clear photos and basic info like height, age, and contact details).
6. Be Cautious of Scams
- Red flags to watch out for:
- Agencies that ask for money upfront.
- Promises of immediate fame or guaranteed jobs.
- “Modeling schools” that charge high fees to teach you basics—while classes can be helpful, they’re not required to break into the industry.
7. Build Your Experience
- If you’re not signed with an agency yet, look for opportunities to model locally:
- Participate in local fashion shows.
- Work with beginner photographers looking to build their portfolios (be sure it’s safe).
- Volunteer for school or community fashion events.
8. Maintain Your Health and Confidence
- Eat well, exercise regularly, and stay healthy.
- Ignore unrealistic beauty standards—modeling is becoming more diverse, and your unique look is your strength!
9. Use Social Media Wisely
- Platforms like Instagram can be powerful tools for showcasing your modeling skills.
- Post high-quality photos, tag brands, and use hashtags to get noticed.
- Keep your profile professional and clean.
10. Be Patient and Persistent
Breaking into the modeling world takes time, but every small step counts. Focus on improving your skills, building connections, and learning about the industry.
You’ve already got people encouraging you, which is a great sign! Stay determined, stay safe, and don’t be afraid to ask for help from trusted adults or professionals along the way. You’ve got this!
Best wishes!

Good Day Alicia!
How to Start Modeling as a Teen Girl
Starting a modeling career as a teen girl can be an exciting journey, and there are several steps you can take to get started. Here’s a detailed guide to help you navigate the process:
1. Understand the Different Types of Modeling
Before diving into modeling, it’s important to understand the various types of modeling available. These include:
Fashion Modeling: This includes high fashion, runway, and editorial work.
Commercial Modeling: This involves modeling for advertisements, catalogs, and promotional materials.
Plus-Size Modeling: This focuses on models who represent larger body sizes.
Fitness Modeling: This type emphasizes athleticism and fitness-related products.
Parts Modeling: This involves modeling specific body parts (e.g., hands, feet).
Identifying which area interests you most will help you focus your efforts.
2. Build Your Portfolio
A portfolio is essential for any aspiring model. It showcases your range and versatility. Here’s how to create one:
Professional Photos: Invest in a professional photographer who specializes in model portfolios. Aim for a variety of looks (headshots, full-body shots, different outfits).
Diverse Styles: Include images that reflect different styles—casual wear, formal attire, swimwear, etc.
Update Regularly: As you grow and change, keep your portfolio updated with new photos.
3. Find Representation
Having an agent can significantly enhance your chances of getting work in the modeling industry. Here are steps to find representation:
Research Agencies: Look for reputable modeling agencies that accept teen models. Some well-known agencies include Elite Model Management and IMG Models.
Submit Applications: Most agencies have online submission forms where you can upload your photos and provide basic information about yourself.
Attend Open Calls: Some agencies hold open casting calls where aspiring models can meet agents in person.
4. Develop Your Skills
Modeling isn’t just about looking good; it also requires skill development:
Practice Posing: Study poses from magazines or online resources and practice in front of a mirror.
Walk Practice: If you’re interested in runway modeling, practice walking in heels and perfecting your runway walk.
Acting Classes: Consider taking acting or improv classes to improve your ability to convey emotions through facial expressions.
5. Network Within the Industry
Networking is crucial in the modeling world:
Social Media: Do not use these means of promotion, there is a real risk of exploitation, and that spells danger, especially since you are under 18 years of age.
6. Stay Healthy and Fit
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is vital for any model:
Balanced Diet: Focus on eating nutritious foods that fuel your body.

Regular Exercise: Engage in physical activities that you enjoy—this could be dancing, yoga, or team sports.
7. Be Prepared for Rejection
Rejection is common in the modeling industry; it’s important to stay resilient:
Stay Positive: Remember that rejection doesn’t define your worth as a model.
Learn from Feedback: If possible, seek constructive criticism from agents or photographers to improve.
By following these steps diligently and remaining dedicated to your goal, you’ll be well on your way to starting a successful modeling career as a teen girl.
