Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Reijker !

I am happy to know that you're planning to begin training for modeling after high school graduation. This is a perfect time as you will have gained helpful independence and can navigate and travel for this career without parental accompaniment. I'm glad that you've come here as we do have many entertainment industry professionals that can guide you, and make sure you are well-informed about this career that may seem like a mystery but is real.

Modeling takes a lot of training and experience. While you are still in high school, it would be a perfect time to start the training and it should all be done in person, on-site at a modeling school. It would also be helpful to be involved with shows and plays at your high school so that you can get used to performing before an audience as well as develop screen and or stage presence. There are no Modeling Schools in Pocatello, Idaho, as well, there are no agencies that handle models so you may want to think about focusing on school shows till you graduate and then find a modeling school to attend. The specialized training is absolutely necessary. You will not want to attend a "go see" and have no idea of what the employer is talking about. Training is crucial to becoming a prepared professional model who knows how to sell herself to obtain work.

Salt Lake City, UT is the largest closest city to you but that city is not known for modeling, so perhaps you may need to think about and plan to relocate to a major city after high school to train and obtain work. This cannot be done remotely online because it is a visual field of work for which you need real time feedback and instruction. So for now, you can consider some large cities in addition to the two main hubs New York City, NY or Los Angeles, CA where you can gain your training and gain experience. You'll have to start saving your money now to invest in your future career.

It is crucial that you only consider professional advice from people in the entertainment industry. All other advice will not be tailored to your circumstances or would be guessing or opinions. It's a career that needs a serious approach if one is to be taken seriously as a Model.

Never use Social Media for your modeling - that is not the correct thing to do, it's not necessary and can also pose risks to have your images and identity on social media as a Model. Social Media is NOT a modeling platform and many people who hire models for legit work go through modeling or casting agencies or already have connections with agencies. Steer clear of all social media for your Modeling and, for now, learn as much as you can at school with theatre and acting and later go for the professional training. Learning modeling is a process just like any other career.

So, after high school, you would take your formal training at modeling school before you do anything else. You can't promote yourself as a model until you have the training because when you go on "go sees" auditions or interviews, you're going to need to know exactly what the people are talking about and that you will learn in modeling school. Modeling looks all easy and glamorous to many people, but this career comes with the same responsibilities, focus and discipline that other careers demand.

Do ask more questions about this field of work and I wish you all the best !

Hey Reijker,

So I can totally tell that - You’re About to Shine! 🌟 Let me just take a moment to appreciate that you’re 13, a competitive dancer, super flexible, and dreaming of a modeling career—that's already a power-packed resume! I think I lost my breath because let's just say-Most people are still trying to figure out what cereal to eat at that age. You? You're ready to take on the fashion world! That's amazing tbh.

So now let's go in for some little advice and hope it gives you a shinning help.

If You’re a Dancer then be sure to USE That! Just saying if you do know it will help but you don't have to be one!
Dancers make some of the best models because: ✔ You already know how to control your body – Posing, angles, fluid movements? You got that in the bag.
✔ Balance & Grace – The way you move can make any outfit look like it belongs in Vogue. ✔ Flexibility = Unique Shots

💡 So as I said If you haven’t yet, start practicing in front of a mirror or record yourself walking like you own the runway. Make your walk a performance, not just a walk. And make it Profesional not just a picture and post!

Okay, let’s talk about the elephant in the room—height. You're barely 5 feet, and guess what? That doesn’t stop you! Models like Devon Aoki (5’5”) and Kate Moss (5’7”) proved that height is just a number when your presence is Big. Don't be discouraged.
🛑 Fashion needs unique faces and personalities, not just tall people.
🛑 Petite models, commercial models, fitness models, and influencers are Thriving as I heard.

💡 Play up your strengths—confidence, personality, movement. OWN your space. Short models stand out when they make their presence unforgettable. And if you are not worried here just start owning your space and build a presence slowly.

Before you jet off to New York or Paris, start where you are: like start small and go big that's the hit and the win (huh that sounds nice🤔😎). Ahum, so,
✅ Get into local fashion shows – Even small town shows count. Experience is key!
✅ Reach out to local photographers – Many do test shoots (FREE practice for you!)
✅ Social Media is Your Free Agency – Post high-quality, creative modeling shots. Tag brands. Show your dance skills. Let people see YOU.
💡 Pro Tip: Agencies scout online now more than ever. Build an Instagram or TikTok that screams "I’M A MODEL." But kep it Profesional not just a post and see me one.

Modeling schools? Meh. Many just take your money. I mean there are amazing helpful ones but if you don't have the budget here is what I say to do Instead:
👉 Take acting classes – Helps with expressions in front of the camera.
👉 Learn from YouTube’s best runway coaches – FREE masterclass, 24/7!
👉 Join dance workshops – Movement is a secret weapon in modeling so since you are flexible you will do just Great!

💡 Now, just add confidence and believe you belong in the modeling world. Because I know your passion and dedication does.

Remember once again Reijker The Industry Wants PERSONALITIES, Not Just Pretty Faces
Ever noticed why some models become superstars while others fade? It’s their ENERGY. Be someone brands love to work with: ✔ Be bold – Don’t wait for opportunities. Make them. ✔ Be reliable – Show up on time, be professional. ✔ Be coachable – Take feedback like a champ. Every “no” is just a “not yet.”

💡So, Be the model that brings the room to life. Brands and photographers LOVE working with people who make the job fun)(like me😜).

You can find Legit Agencies & Dodge the Scams because they are scams.
🚩 If an “agency” asks for money upfront—Run. 🚩 If someone randomly DMs you saying, “You have the perfect look! Just pay $500 for our portfolio package”—BLOCK Them. ✅ Real agencies make money by getting YOU jobs. They don’t ask YOU to pay them first.
Look up agencies like Ford Models, Wilhelmina, Elite Models, and Next Models. It seems that They all have open calls where you can apply!

Now I need my break so know that Your Future is Waiting! 🚀

Reijker, you’re already ahead of the game: flexible, confident, and eager to learn. That’s GOLD in the modeling world!

The ONLY thing standing between you and your dream is ACTION. Start today. Practice. Post your work. Learn from pros. No excuses.
The industry needs someone like YOU. Now go give the runway a reason to remember your name! 💃🔥 You got this career like a koala never letting go his tree so stay amazing and keep shooting high but start somewhere. Good luck!

Julie Ann’s Answer

First off, congratulations on wanting to pursue your dream! When I was in junior high, I attended Barbizon modeling school. For me, it was more of a finishing school rather than a direct path into modeling. Be wary of places that are more focused on making money than on genuinely helping aspiring models succeed.

The modeling industry is exciting, but it requires strategy, resilience, and smart decision-making to succeed. Let’s break it down into clear, actionable steps to help you navigate this journey

Step 1: Assess Your Strengths & Choose Your Path in Modeling
Not all modeling careers are the same. Before diving in, determine what type of modeling best suits your look, skills, and interests.

Types of Modeling:
1. High Fashion/Runway Modeling – Typically requires a height of 5’8” and above (for women) and 5’11” and above (for men). This includes working with designers, runway shows, and major fashion campaigns.
2. Commercial Modeling – Focuses on advertisements for everyday brands. Height and body shape requirements are more flexible.
3. Print/Editorial Modeling – Features in magazines, catalogs, and branding campaigns. You’ll need an expressive face and ability to work well in front of the camera.
4. Fitness Modeling – Requires a lean, muscular physique. Many fitness models also work as personal trainers or influencers.
5. Plus-Size Modeling – Typically starts at size 12 and up for women, with an emphasis on confidence and body positivity.
6. Petite Modeling – For individuals under 5’7” who work in specific commercial, fitness, or niche fashion campaigns.
7. Parts Modeling – Focuses on hands, feet, hair, or other body parts for advertisements.
👉 Action Step: Research agencies and brands that align with the type of modeling you’re most interested in.

Step 2: Develop Your Physical & Professional Readiness
Physical Preparation
1. Stay in shape naturally without extreme dieting. Healthy skin, hair, and overall wellness are just as important as body shape.
2. Maintain good skincare, hydration, and sleep habits.
3. Practice posing and walking regularly by studying YouTube tutorials or taking local modeling workshops.
Professional Preparation
1. Confidence & Presence: Watch interviews of professional models to learn how they present themselves.
2. Acting & Movement: Taking acting classes or dance lessons can help with expressive posing and movement.
3. Social Media Presence: Many models build careers by showcasing their work on Instagram and TikTok. Develop a professional portfolio online.
👉 Action Step: Start a model training routine—practice posing daily, research modeling techniques, and work on confidence.

Step 3: Build a Strong Portfolio
Your modeling portfolio is your resume in this industry. It should showcase a variety of looks, expressions, and styling.

How to Create a Portfolio:
Invest in Professional Photos – Hire a reputable photographer to create high-quality, diverse shots.
Include These Essentials:
1. Headshots (Natural & Styled)
2. Full-body shots (casual, fitness, formal)
3. Different expressions & moods
4. Minimal makeup (for a clean look)
Build a Digital Portfolio – A website or a well-curated Instagram account can help you get noticed.
💡 Pro Tip: You don’t need to pay thousands for a portfolio. Many photographers will work with aspiring models for test shoots or collaborations.

👉 Action Step: Research local photographers who work with aspiring models and start booking test shoots.

Step 4: Network & Get Experience
Networking is key in the modeling industry. Here’s how to build connections:

Where to Find Opportunities:
1. Attend Open Casting Calls – Major agencies like IMG, Ford, and Elite have open calls where you can audition.
2. Local Fashion Events – Get involved in community fashion shows or student designer projects.
3. Instagram & TikTok – Follow modeling agencies and industry professionals to engage with their content.
4. Freelance Work – Sign up on platforms like Model Mayhem to find legitimate projects.
💡 Pro Tip: The industry is competitive, so expect rejections, but don’t get discouraged. Each casting is a learning experience.

👉 Action Step: Find three upcoming casting calls in your area and plan to attend.

Step 5: Sign with a Reputable Agency (and Avoid Scams!)
Finding a legitimate agency is crucial to your success.

Signs of a Reputable Modeling Agency:
✅ They have a strong track record and recognizable client list.
✅ They don’t ask for upfront fees (real agencies earn money when you book jobs).
✅ They sign models after a free audition or portfolio review.
✅ They provide industry-standard contracts.

Red Flags & Scams to Watch Out For:
🚩 Agencies that require you to pay thousands upfront for classes or portfolio sessions.
🚩 “Modeling Schools” that promise guaranteed success.
🚩 "Agencies" that scout you in malls or via DMs asking for payment.
🚩 “Exposure” jobs that ask you to work for free with no reputable credits.

💡 Pro Tip: Top agencies in the U.S. include IMG Models, Ford Models, Wilhelmina, Elite Model Management, and Next Models.

👉 Action Step: Research three legitimate agencies and see if they offer open calls.

Step 6: Consider the Best Locations & Schools for Modeling
While modeling doesn’t require a formal degree, certain cities and programs can help boost your chances.

Top U.S. Cities for Modeling Careers
📍 New York City – The fashion capital, home to top agencies and brands.
📍 Los Angeles – Great for commercial, fitness, and acting/modeling hybrid careers.
📍 Miami – Ideal for swimwear and commercial modeling.
📍 Chicago – Strong in print and commercial modeling.
📍 Atlanta – Emerging as a commercial and fashion hub.

Top Schools for Fashion & Modeling-Related Studies
🎓 Fashion Institute of Technology (NYC) – Great for networking with designers and industry pros.
🎓 Parsons School of Design (NYC) – A hub for future fashion leaders.
🎓 Los Angeles Film & Fashion School – Focuses on entertainment industry modeling.
🎓 Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) – Connected to fashion shows and campaigns.

💡 Pro Tip: Many successful models never attend modeling school. Instead, they train independently and seek direct industry experience.

👉 Action Step: Consider relocating to a major fashion city or visiting for auditions.

Final Thoughts: Confidence & Persistence Win
Pursuing a modeling career is an exciting but competitive journey. You’ll need confidence, persistence, and industry knowledge to stand out. Don’t get discouraged by setbacks, and always prioritize working with legitimate professionals.

Recap of Your Next Steps:
✅ Identify which type of modeling fits your look and interests.
✅ Develop a professional portfolio with quality photos.
✅ Attend open casting calls and network with industry professionals.
✅ Research and sign with a reputable agency—avoid scams!
✅ Consider relocating to a top modeling city for better opportunities.

🚀 Most importantly, believe in yourself and keep pushing forward! Every successful model started where you are now—taking that first step toward their dream.

Julie Ann recommends the following next steps:

Research agencies and brands that align with the type of modeling you’re most interested in.
Start a model training routine—practice posing daily, research modeling techniques, and work on confidence.
Research local photographers who work with aspiring models and start booking test shoots.
Find three upcoming casting calls in your area and plan to attend.

Thank you comment icon @reijker - Please read my advice on this page. Please remember that before you do anything, you NEED TO BE TRAINED AS A MODEL. It is NOT something to jump into and doesn't happen overnight. Your plan to finish high school first is a plan that you should stick with and be very careful from whom you take advice. As someone in the entertainment industry I find a lot of advice people are giving can lead very young people down the wrong road. You won't be able to be a model until you know how to be one and that takes training. Michelle M.
