Hey Lilly! It’s awesome that you already want to work and follow your passion—especially with animals and being a horse trainer someday. Even though you’re 13, there are plenty of ways to start building skills and earning money in Tennessee.
In Tennessee, there are some rules about working at your age. You can’t get a regular job at a store or restaurant yet (those usually start at 14 or 16), but there are plenty of jobs you can do!
Since you’re creative and love animals, here are some perfect options which I am gonna let you know.
1. Pet Sitting or Dog Walking
– Help neighbors by caring for their pets when they’re away.
– Bonus: You get paid AND hang out with cute animals!
2. Horse Stable Helper
– Ask local horse farms if they need help feeding, grooming, or cleaning stables.
– This is a great way to learn and get closer to becoming a professional horse trainer.
3. Babysitting
– If you’re responsible, babysitting is a classic way to earn cash.
– Take a babysitting safety course (your local YMCA or Red Cross might offer one).
4. Yard Work & Gardening
– Mowing lawns, pulling weeds, or planting flowers.
– Perfect if you don’t like sitting around all day!
5. Sell Handmade Items
– Since you love to sew and make stuff, try selling your creations.
– Ideas: Custom pillows, tote bags, or cool crafts.
– Sell at local markets, online (with a parent’s help), or to friends and family.
6. Drawing & Art Commissions
– If you like to draw, offer custom artwork to people.
– Design pet portraits, cool sketches, or personalized items for gifts.
If you wanna know how to Get Started, then just:
1. Spread the Word:
– Let family, friends, and neighbors know you’re offering your services.
– Make a flyer or post online (with a parent’s permission).
2. Volunteer First (If Needed):
– Offer to help out at a horse stable or pet shelter to get experience.
– Sometimes, volunteer work turns into a paid job later!
3. Be Reliable & Responsible:
– Show up on time and do your best—it helps build trust and keeps the jobs coming.
So for the road to Becoming a Horse Trainer here is my considerable amazing steps ✨😎✨, Yea, uhum, anyways!
Step 1: Work with horses any chance you get (volunteer, take lessons).
Step 2: Study animal care and horse behavior as you grow.
Step 3: In high school, look for programs or apprenticeships with local stables.
Step 4: Consider equine studies (horse training) after school.
Fun Joke Because Why Not right? 😉
Why did the horse get a job?
He wanted to make a little "hay" while the sun shines!
So, Lilly, keep chasing your dreams—you’re already on the right trail! Got more questions? I’m here to help! All the best buddy! 🥰🤗

This is a difficult question to answer Lilly, because technically you can’t work legally. The minimum age for employment is 14 and everyone under the age of 16 has a limit to the number of hours they can work. However as a 13-year-old you can still work for their friends, family, neighbors, or online (with parental permission, of course). So while you might not see a 13-year-old working at a restaurant, there’s still a lot you can do.
🎬 YOUTUBE CONTENT CREATOR
At 13 your allowed to have your own account on YouTube and post videos. Whether the content is designed to be entertaining, informative, or anything else, it could potentially turn into an income stream with enough time and attention. While creating content as a 13-year-old is allowed, monetizing a channel is difficult if you’re under 18. Since that’s the case, a 13-year old YouTuber will need help from a parent if you want to add ads to your channel.
🖥️ CODER
Do you know how to code, as the world becomes more digital, it continues to need more coders and programmers. The amazing thing about this valuable skill is that there’s no age requirement to learn. You can teach yourself right from home or learn it in school. As a coder, you can offer your expertise to someone else for money or build your own app, website, or video game that you can sell to others.
🧿 VIDEO GAME STREAMER
For 13-year-olds, playing video games for a living might be incredibly appealing. Sites like Twitch allow 13-year-olds to have their own accounts, and they can even monetize with a parent’s support once they meet the other requirements. This could make video game streaming one of the best online job options for teens.
🏆 TUTOR
For 13-year-olds who are great at a particular school subject, working as an academic tutor might be a great fit. They can help another student improve their understanding, all while earning a pretty penny. This also works as an online job for 13-year-olds. Essentially, it relies on the same equipment and software as anyone else would need for video calls, making it a solid choice if you want to work from home.
🚼 BABYSITTER
Another one of the classic 13-year-old jobs is babysitter. Once you’re 13, you’re legally allowed to babysit in nearly every state, though some areas may require CPR and first aid certification.
CONCLUSION
Finding a job as a 13-year-old can be a rewarding experience, offering you the chance to earn money, gain skills, and develop responsibility. Whether you choose traditional jobs or explore creative opportunities, there are plenty of options available. Always prioritize your safety. Make sure someone knows where you are when working and avoid accepting jobs that make you uncomfortable.

In Tennessee, you can start working at 13 but there are certain guidelines on the type of job and number of hours.
Talk to your parents to get permission and help with your job search.
If you like to make stuff, try sewing, crafting, and painting which has the potential to grow as a business.
Local grocery stores can be a good option for working as an assistant.
Also, you can help the neighbors with lawn work, pet sitting, and dog walking.
If you want to be a horse trainer then start with small tasks to do in a barn, a firm specializing in horses, or horse camps, so that you can gain the skills and experience you need.

Hi! I have seen young people post on their local Facebook community group offering services of help to others locally. This could include pet sitting, babysitting, cleaning, yard work, etc.
This may be a good way to start to look for ways to get involved.
