Dr. James’s Answer

I am a retired NYPD officer, and I learned that the criminal justice field values both technical skills and soft skills. Here are some key skills needed:

1. Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: You need to make quick, informed decisions in tough situations. Analyzing evidence and spotting patterns is important.

2. Ethical Judgment and Integrity: You must have a strong sense of right and wrong to make fair decisions, especially in sensitive cases.

3. Communication Skills: You need to be good at speaking and writing for reports, court testimony, and dealing with people like victims, suspects, and coworkers.

4. Attention to Detail: Being careful with small details is crucial for investigations and legal work.

5. Adaptability and Resilience: The job can be unpredictable and stressful, so staying calm and flexible is important.

6. Technical Proficiency: Depending on your job, you might need skills in cybersecurity, forensic analysis, or data management.

7. Cultural Competency: Understanding and respecting different cultures helps build trust and ensures fair treatment.

Good luck!
