Hi Olivia,

Fantastic question! As a social worker, I can assure you that the most rewarding internships and volunteer experiences are those that equip you with practical skills, introduce you to diverse communities, and deepen your understanding of social systems.

Consider these exciting opportunities:

1) Community Centers – You'll gain valuable experience working with families, children, or older adults, and learn how to effectively connect people with the resources they need.

2) Schools – Volunteering in schools or after-school programs offers insights into working with youth, understanding IEPs, and navigating educational systems.

3) Hospitals or Clinics – These environments are perfect for learning about medical social work, crisis management, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

4) Domestic Violence or Homeless Shelters – You'll witness the impact of trauma and learn essential skills in safety planning, advocacy, and case management.

5) Mental Health Programs – Whether it's a hotline, outpatient clinic, or residential program, these experiences provide a strong foundation in mental health support.

6) Legal Aid or Advocacy Organizations – Ideal if you're interested in the intersection of law and social work, especially in areas like housing, immigration, or child welfare.

7) Nonprofits or Mutual Aid Groups – These opportunities teach you how communities come together to support one another and advocate for positive change.

The key is to explore different settings and remain open to learning. Even if a particular setting isn't your ideal match, it will still help you grow your skills and build confidence.

Every experience enriches your toolkit, helping you become a more capable and well-rounded social worker. Keep pushing forward, you’re on the path to making a real difference!

In Texas, to be a social worker you need a social worker degree. You then take the state test to be licensed. A Master's of Social Work will open more doors for you.

Dr. Harmony’s Answer

Hello Olivia,

To develop the necessary skills to succeed in social work, I would suggest you consider internships and volunteer experiences in the following areas;
1. Direct service and care experience in the fields of hospital, community engagement, marginalised communities, and courtrooms.
2. Community support and development in the fields of youth initiatives, healthy living(you could work directly with veterans addressing their needs and concerns), adolescent life, and teenagers.
3. Specialised training in the area of mental health, substance abuse, counselling, advocacy, and sexual violence, develop skills in assessment, intervention and support.
