Hi! Great question, Miakoda.

I graduated from college with a degree in biomedical engineering and spent about 7 years working in the Sustaining/Production engineering department at various medical device companies. During that time, I really wanted to move to Research & Development engineering, but it seemed tough at that point in my career.

I decided to go for it anyway. I contacted an R&D engineering manager at another medical device company and had several informational interviews with him to explore my options. I also joined my company’s career coach program and asked the COO to be my coach to gain more insights. I started discussing my plans with engineering managers at my company, and eventually, I was able to make the switch. It turned out to be the best decision ever! Since then, I've become an engineering manager myself, my salary has gone up a lot, and I've learned so much more than if I had stayed in my old role!
