Will a pre-med or biology major better prepare me for optometry school? #Spring25
Hi! I will be attending Middlebury College as a freshman this fall, where students are not placed into a major when accepted. I just wanted to start thinking about which major would be better for me since my end goal is to be an optometrist.

You are pursuing a great career as an optometrist. As you start your undergraduate coursework, keep in mind that you can major in any subject, but you need to take all the required pre-requisite classes for optometry school admissions (generally biology, chemistry, physics, statistics, calculus, anatomy, physiology). Because of this, many people who attend optometry school are science majors. That way, many of the classes they are taking for their major also meet optometry school admission requirements. But there are individuals who are non-science majors who go to optometry school too.
If you are interested in majoring in science, like biology, that is terrific. You will find that you are well prepared for optometry school because you understand the basics that you will learn a lot more about as they relate to eyes and vision. Being a science major will also show optometry school admissions that you can handle a rigorous course of study. Taking a glimpse at what is offered at Middlebury College, whether you major in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Biology, or Neuroscience, they will all show you are ready for optometry school. Select the major that offers classes that interest you most.
Best of luck to you!
Research the pre-requisite classes that are required at two or three optometry schools you may be interested in applying to. See how these compare to the classes required for the major you are interested in.
