What are some career options in psychology that don’t require a master’s or PhD, and what do those jobs actually look like day-to-day?

I’m currently an online psychology major and really interested in mental health and helping others, but I’m not sure if grad school is the right path for me. I want to explore careers I can do with just a bachelor’s degree that still feel meaningful and impactful. I’d love to hear from people who are already working in the field or have been in my shoes before!

Hello and great question.
There are a few types of jobs that do not require a master and PhD. I will say consider the environment that you will be working and with because that will also determine where hiring is massive.
Some jobs would be
Substance treatment supporter
Case manager with any age, demographic, mental health issue.
I will include, sometimes they may require a certificate, which is good however it may be a bit more school, which is honestly why people go on to get a masters and PhD.

I added a link below. Hope this helps.

Hello Esmeralda,

That's a really good question, and a lot of psychology majors ask themselves that. You can still pursue fulfilling and people-focused employment with just a bachelor's degree in psychology, even though graduate school does offer additional opportunities in the mental health area. For instance, you can think about working as a case manager or case worker, where you would coordinate care among agencies and assist clients in accessing resources like housing, counseling, or food assistance.

A behavioral health technician or mental health technician is another typical position that involves working closely with patients in hospitals or residential treatment facilities, supporting their everyday activities and keeping an eye on their conduct. In state hospitals or correctional facilities, some psychology graduates serve as psychiatric technicians, assisting with patient monitoring and security. Working as a peer support specialist or hotline representative, where you would connect those experiencing emotional distress to emergency services, could be a great fit for someone who is passionate about crisis work.

Other positions that let you use your empathy and communication abilities to help others include human services assistant, youth program coordinator, and even HR assistant in a corporate context. Many of these positions provide chances to make a significant difference without requiring a graduate degree or license. You might think about obtaining certificates like behavior technician training or mental health first aid to strengthen your credentials. Finding the suitable population or environment can also be aided by volunteering or interning in places like schools, community programs, or shelters.

Additionally, keep in mind that your experience will only strengthen your application if you decide to go back to graduate school later.

Best wishes!
