Fred’s Answer

Do you enjoy computer science? Is there another major you would enjoy more?

Remember...this is the field you will work in for the next (roughly) 40-50 years of your life. Pick something you enjoy doing, otherwise it will be a LONG forty+ years.

Hi Latavion,

I am glad you are seeking opinion from others. I would say it is also very important to see where you passion is. Work careers can be long (30+ years) and so it must be in an area where you enjoy accomplishing goals every day. I have had 10 years+ of experience as a Software Engineer and as a Manager of a Software Team. That being said Com Sci is very interesting field with numerous applications. We are in the middle of an Information and AI revolution currently and Comp Sci provides key concepts to make this possible and offers many opportunities to succeed.

Computer Sci can be a very rewarding field.

Computer Scientists have a deep curiosity about how Computer Software/Systems work. They use this knowledge to solve problems and create solutions. This field is a fast-moving field from a technology perspective, so it calls for life-long learning of evolving technologies like Cloud, AI, Quantum, Cyber Security etc.

Computer Scientists work to understand and create solutions using complex systems that involve a combination of Networks, Storage, Firmware, Software, Hardware, Security etc. It could be a lot of fun/challenge to understand how everything comes together to provide automated solutions.

With Comp Sci one can pursue many different types of careers in the field. Development, Research, Testing, Operations, Repair etc. It can be a challenging area while also being fun.

High School/College training is critical for building a sound foundation of knowledge and practice critical and logical thinking. Various labs/assignments provide hands on experience to further reinforce theoretical knowledge.

Depending on your capabilities Comp Sci offers competitive pay and also an opportunity to start your own company. Look at Perplexity. Please be prepared for worldwide competition from some of the best minds innovating and creating solutions.

I hope these points with help you in your quest to answer your question. Most important factor is what you will enjoy doing for many years to come and thrive. Wish you good luck in your journey.

David’s Answer

The first step is to discover which part of computer science excites you the most. This major offers training in many areas like software, hardware, and networks. It opens up plenty of job opportunities for you. What's key is figuring out which area of computer science you truly love.

Cole’s Answer

To be honest, in 2025, it has probably never been harder to get a job as a CompSci grad since the dawn of the Internet Age. There are many statistics showing that there are even less job postings/openings now than there were during the Great Recession in 2008.

That being said, however, from ~2018-2022, it had never been *easier* to find a job and to get promoted in this field. We are also on the cusp of a massive potential paradigm shift with Generative AI. Good job markets and economic downturns come and go, but if you're truly interested in programming/software and think you could have a productive and enjoyable career pursuing it, then go for it! If there's something else that you're more passionate about, then do that instead.

Michael’s Answer

The answer to any "is this job worth it" is simple.

Can you see yourself doing this task for several hours every day? Will it's expected financial benefit be able to allow one to live the life you want to live? There are certainly plenty of other avenues to consider, but that is the general rule I would follow.

In general, I would not urge to follow a job just because its one's passion nor just because it pays well. Both can work wonderfully, but it can also make one hate your passion or be absolutely miserable for a large portion of your day.

As far as technology is concerned. AI will not take out all coding jobs, and it is personal conjecture that the current difficulties with finding a job have more to do with the backlash from certain business decisions during the pandemic than exactly AI. That doesn't stop it being a tough time right now, but it is highly expected here that it will bounce back in due time.

Elijah’s Answer

It's hard to say because the truth is: it depends.
Do you enjoy coding? Are you actually interested in how technology works?
If the answer is no, it's possible this might not be the best career path for you.
I personally think computer science is definitely worth it.
There are very few jobs that will pay as well while giving you the opportunity to work from virtually anywhere with an internet connection.
