What advice, materials, or tools would anyone suggest to gain more experience with ICD-10 medical billing and coding as its been quite a long time since I coded?#Spring25
I haven't done any work with ICD-10 the last time I was billing back in 2014 we were still using ICD-9 in that office and was getting prepared to transition into ICD-10. #Spring25?

To get real-world experience, I recommend finding free materials online or checking with official boards that issue certificates. For ICD-10, you can look at Coding Clarified or the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Another good place to find information is LinkedIn. Many professionals share news, articles, and resources there, which can be very helpful.

Hello Tanisha,
Good question! It's good that you want to reenter the profession and brush up on your skills. Although there have been many changes since 2014, the good news is that you have a solid foundation from your previous experience; all you need are the right materials and updates to get back on track with ICD-10.
Going over the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting again first will be my first advice to you. These are free to access online and are updated by CMS and CDC each year. It's a great way to brush up on the principles, standards, and structure of coding.
Next, think about signing up for a certification program or refresher course. Specific ICD-10 training is available from groups like AAPC and AHIMA, including self-paced, online courses. To help you become familiar with modern coding techniques, they frequently offer quizzes, real-world coding scenarios, and access to up-to-date code books.
Additionally, you may wish to purchase a CPT and HCPCS Level II book and a 2025 ICD-10-CM coding manual. In daily coding, these remain the fundamental references. Use online simulators or practice coding charts to regain your rhythm if you're a hands-on learner.
Finally, explore LinkedIn groups, YouTube channels, and medical coding forums where experts exchange coding advice, updates, and practice questions. You may ask questions and remain up to date on sites like CodingIntel, AAPC's forums, and JustCoding.
Your talents will return stronger than ever with a little review and practice because you have already completed this task. You're capable!
Best wishes!
