Are there scholarships that cover living expenses?

Now that I'll be attending college full time, it means I'll have to work part time to cover my living expenses. However, I foresee having miscellaneous expenses at school such as materials, books, etc. #college #scholarships

Great question MQ! There are definitely some scholarships that could help with your expenses - it really depends on the individual scholarship and how it is set up. Some are very explicit is what is covered (e.g. only tuition) and others may provide just general money (e.g. $1000 per year).


There are lots of great places online that you can check out to see what kinds of scholarships you may qualify for, such as https://www.scholarships.com/. And definitely make sure to fill out your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) every year at https://fafsa.ed.gov/ , even if you aren’t sure that you would qualify for anything!

I'm not aware of scholarships that normally cover living expenses unless you are living on campus, in which case they will since your bill is calculated all as one. If you're living off campus, you'd have to get a job of some sort for additional financial support. If your in that situation, I'd recommend doing a work-study. You can get study time back if you work in a dorm lobby or a library. You can get lots of free food if you work at the cafeteria. I was able to do both and it was a big boon to both my undergraduate and graduate studies. It helped me connect the dots financially while living in college as well. Plus, you save yourself hours of time commuting to and from campus and don't have to deal with quite the same stress/pressure from having a real job off-campus.

In my personal experience, my graduate scholarship did not cover living expenses. However, I had a "graduate assistantship" where I worked in campus a certain number of hours per week and with that I could afford to pay for my housing, books, food, insurance, etc. It was not much, and I had not a lot of spare change left, but you can look for jobs like this in campus.

Once you are accepted into the school of your choice, contact the admin office of the department you will be studying in and inquire about available campus jobs. They will be a good starting point and may guide you further. Good luck!

Becoming a resident assistant at your school can cover the cost of your living expenses in full. Miscellaneous expenses such as books and materials can be covered with stipends provided by your school. I would suggest inquiring about both. Off campus housing can also be a cost-saver depending on your loans.
