Does it matter what company I get a summer internship with?

How important is it to get an internship over the summer with a company that you would like to work for in the future? Should I prioritize getting an internship anywhere over getting an internship with a specific company? #Spring25

Anthony,

It seems to me you already know the answer to your question. The experience in your chosen field is what counts. Naturally it would be ideal to get an internship at the place where you would eventually like to work full time post-graduation for many reasons. First, you will get to know the people and environment of your future company. Second, you will experience first-hand what your job will be as well as the rigors of the job and third, the company will get to know you (your work ethic, your ability to work independently, your ability to solve problems, ability to work in a team, and your punctuality).

On the occasion you don't get an internship at that specific company, any experience you get in your chosen field will look good on your resume. Moreover, anybody overseeing your work should be able to give you a written recommendation (get this before your internship ends so you have in your hand when you leave). These recommendations will be valuable to you when you look for permanent work, even at your first-choice company.

Best of luck to you and your career choice.

Regards,
Larry A.

Hi Anthony,
Internships are a great opportunity for you to have hands-on experience. It allows you to see concepts come alive in the field, apply the critical thinking & analytical skills you have learned. You also build valuable skills such as communication, leadership and problem solving.
Internships give you a good first hand idea of what type of work you may like or may not like. It therefore helps you make informed decisions about your career options.
Multi-disciplinary internships are ideal for high school students still exploring different options for college majors.
For students already persuing college majors, it's important to figure out your direction early enough in your career. You can then build up a list of your preferred industries and employers. You then need to zero down your choices based on which companies are hiring interns, which has the best internship programs and their locations.
While applying for internships, it's best to start early enough and be mindful of timelines.
