Getting a remote job with no prior experience requires a strategic approach. Here’s how:

1. Highlight Remote-Ready Skills – Emphasize communication, independence, time management, and tech proficiency.

2. Gain Virtual Experience – Try freelancing, online courses, or remote volunteer work.

Target the Right Companies – Search niche boards like We Work Remotely or FlexJobs and verify job legitimacy.

3. Ace the Interview – Show your ability to work remotely with clear communication and a professional setup.

4. Tailor Your Application – Focus on self-motivation, digital collaboration, and relevant projects.

With fewer remote jobs and misleading ads, standing out is key. Then ace the remote interview.

Keep in mind many organizations are pulling back on remote work and bringing employees back into the office citing collaboration and innovation as reasons. On the other hand, some industries, like tech, finance, legal, and construction are slowly warming up to the idea of remote work. So, while remote work isn't "dead," it will require more strategic approach. Niche job boards and networking might be the ticket.

Be careful of online ads. Most are outright scams, preying on hob seekers desperate for flexibility.

David’s Answer

Being remote is often about staying connected and being present. I call it tending my spiderweb. In your interviews it's about personality and presence. Show you are engaged, think about how eye contact and body language can be conveyed. Think about how you will overcome working with others as a remote and talk about how you will be maintaining those connections. You'll have peers and clients and leaders and stakeholders and you'll need tactics to stay close to all of them. Think this through and highlight how you'll do it in the interview and beyond.

Hi Katie!
Remote work is super popular in 2025! Since the pandemic, many companies have realized how great remote work is for saving money and giving employees a better work-life balance. There are lots of ways to dive into this. Start by searching online. Websites like https://www.indeed.com/ are great—just use the filter for remote jobs. Before your interview, double-check that your internet and devices are working perfectly. Interviews are your chance to shine and show why you’re the best fit for the job. Be ready to explain why you want the job and why it suits you. Do some research and, if possible, talk to someone from the department to learn more about the role. Show confidence and use clear communication to wow the interviewers. Remember to share all the reasons you’re qualified—this isn’t bragging, it’s essential! Don’t worry about lacking remote experience; everyone starts somewhere. I’m working remotely now, and after 25 years in an office, I made it work for me, and you can too.

You’ve got this, and I believe in you! Good luck!
