How can I find an Electrical Powerline Technology internship?

I have been selected for the Electrical Powerline Technology program starting Fall 2025, and I'll be required to complete an internship in Kansas after my first year. What is the best way to begin networking to increase my chances of securing an internship opportunity in electrical powerline technology?

Hi Kalim,

Congratulations on your acceptance into the program!

I would recommend that you talk to your department when you get there. They certainly have a list of companies where their students usually go. Your classes might also include company visits or have guest lecturers from those companies that hire people like yourself.

Next, make a LinkedIn profile for yourself. Make it look nice and professional. You'll find tips and tricks how to do that on LinkedIn.

You can then search for people in Kansas who work in the kind of position you will be looking for when you graduate. Connect. Ask them for an informational interview or just ask a few questions pertaining to the job, requirements and your education. Not everyone will respond, but some will.

You can also find out, from company websites or through LinkedIn who does the hiring in companies you are interested in. Connect. Ask relevant questions.

You now have connections at companies that might have internships next year. Keep it professional. When the time comes, you can ask for a referral from an employee inside the company and you can send your application directly to the hiring person.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!

KP
