Have you ever had a moment where you thought, ‘This is exactly why I became a nurse’? #Spring25

I want to hear any story! Good, bad, weird, funny. I personally want to become a nurse after taking care of my mother who passed away because of metastatic cancer. Being her "mini nurse" made me realize how much of a difference I could make. Although she was my favorite patient, there were definitely times where I questioned if I could do it or not.

There are so many stories to tell. Two I will never forget. The first one i had completed diabetic teaching with her about a year prior to this incident. We received a call stating she hadn't peed in 24 hrs. I went to her home to check on her and was totally appalled by what I found. The patient was in bed, her eyes were sunken in, fingertips black from tip of finger to 2nd knuckle and extreme SOB. Actually, she was struggling. So I called 911 praying the whole time she didn't go into respiratory arrest. She did survive but I was so mad at her daughters for not calling sooner. The one daughter was a CNA too.
I've worked mostly geriatrics but I did do a couple years in 4th and 5th grade with a special needs boy. We had a blast. As I said, so many memories. Never be afraid to laugh or cry when visiting someone. 🥰

Hi Joyce! I think it's great you are wanting to be a nurse and are looking for inspirational stories. I myself have a few. Here is one tgat stands out: I had this lung cancer patient on whom the doctor wanted to do a biopsy. However, she was in bad shape and had a high risk of dying from the procedure. Regardless of what the outcome was going to be, the treatment was going to be the same: nothing. They already knew she was too advanced. I spoke with her and made her realize that she had the option of saying no to the biopsy, which she did. That eased her mind greatly. She died shortly after, sadly, but was able to avoid that extra stress.
