What are some summer programs I can do as a world literature student?

I was wondering if there are programs out there for literature students to enhance their studies or prepare for grad school. I’ve already done research with a faculty mentor and plan to study abroad, so I just wanted to know if there was anything else I can do.

Hi Maya, getting ready to study abroad is an exciting adventure. Start by learning about the country you'll be studying in. Look into its culture, pick up some basic language skills, and understand what is considered polite or impolite there.

If you're heading to graduate school, you probably have a bachelor's degree in literature. This is a great chance to explore topics you love even more deeply. As you aim for a Master's or Doctorate, you'll need to focus on a thesis or dissertation. Think about which literature topics excite you the most and start brainstorming ideas for your research.

Having a mentor is a wonderful asset, so keep learning from them. Wishing you the best of luck on your journey!

As a world literature student, here are a few summer programs that can deepen your studies and prep you for grad school:

1. Literary Summer Schools – Programs like those at Oxford, Columbia, or NYU often offer short summer courses in literature, critical theory, or comparative lit.
2. Publishing or Editorial Internships – Great for gaining real-world experience and understanding the industry side of literature.
3. Creative Writing Workshops – Even if you focus on analysis, writing workshops (like Tin House or Iowa Summer Writing Festival) can sharpen your skills and give new perspectives.
4. Language or Translation Programs – Since world lit often involves texts in translation, enhancing language skills can boost your grad school profile.

You’re already ahead with research and study abroad, so adding one of these can round out your experience beautifully!
