What should I expect at an HBCU?

Soooo attending a HBCU is going to be what you make it! Every school, no matter where you go, its going to have its ups and downs! But, as a HBCU alumni it is great! It will teach you patience, organizations skills, and force you to gain new friends and build great BONDS!  My HBCU allowed me to travel overseas and across country to do what I love, singing.  There are a lot of great organizations and groups you can join that will take you far! So if you are going to attend a HBCU reach out to that school and or try to get on a HBCU college tour where you can visit the school.  You could even set up a HBCU to come visit your school as well! Aaliyah, First I want to say Eagle Pride. As a proud HBCU alum of North Carolina Central University. I found a since of belonging being around people that were like me. In more ways than one. Coming from a predominantly white community it was refreshing to be in group of my peers. As the previous responses it is what you make it. Make sure that you participate and enjoy the experience also you make long life friends while you are there.

My HBCU experience was great! I learned a lot about my culture and history. I feel I got a better understanding of who I was and how I could impact the world around me. I was exposed to lots of African culture through activities and classroom assignments. I really felt empowered and confident in who I was and how I could be a positive attribute to society. If you want to learn more about your history and culture through live experiences chose HBCU!

I went to a HBCU in a larger city and had a great experience. I'm from a small town so going somewhere bigger was important to me. There was the essence of history and culture all around the campus that inspired me to be better everyday. I received a quality education and made life long friends. All colleges have students that come from other states. That's one of the great things about college in general, the chance to meet and get to know people from different backgrounds.

I will say HBCU's have a tendency to cost more because they are private colleges. I would also suggest going to the campus to see if it feels like home and exploring the city around it as well.

I loved my HBCU experience. I experienced smaller class sizes, which led to more interaction with the professors. I experienced a profound sense of community which has positively impacted me to this day. I was challenged academically, socially, and politically. I was prepared for life after college. But, you should know that your experience will be what you make it. If you want to get involved with things that are not positive for your life, you will find there like you will find it anywhere.
