Is Gender Studies BA qualifitied to apply for gradute programs in Master's of Social Work?

I love my major gender studies, and I want to focus on serving marginalized people that are from lower income, domestic violence survivors, people who are suffering from trauma (hunger, poverty, economic hardship, physical, and sexual abuse, emotional), I want to empower, protect, serve, and embrace the bodies that are suffering in this world which includes children, teens, and family. I plan to earn my BA in Gender studies but I am not sure if this is the best major for applying into graduate school for earning my master's in social work. I currently work at a homeless shelter and I love being a guest advocate. #SOCIAL WORK #HUMANITARIAN #JUSTICE #GENDER EQUITY #LOVE #GENDER STUDIES #MSW

Shalissa’s Answer

Yes 100%!

Your passion is relevant and that truly matters in this field. Sure it may be a bit difficult in terms of requirements and a learning curve, but your heart is in it. You have the undergrad degree and the right mindset for an MSW track. Follow that gut feeling (and your awesome hashtags) and apply! Also, apply at Varius schools; social work is a competitive field in grad school!

Good luck, don’t lose your passion!

Dhairya’s Answer

Short answer yes, you should apply. Long answer, you should check the application requirements for the program you are interested in applying for. Depending on the program, some may require the GREs and have minimum GPA requirements. Most masters program don't care what you majored in, as long as you you have an undergraduate degree.

In terms of social work, your education and volunteer experience will be great assets in your application. Good luck!
