Anthony’s Answer

HVAC technicians are typically licensed professionals who have obtained the proper certifications that are required by the state and/or city in which they work. The required certifications and licenses may differ from state to state and city to city so it is important to check the requirements for your area. The one certification that technicians must obtain is the EPA Section 608 Technician Certification which requires technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release ozone depleting refrigerants into the atmosphere to be certified. I would recommend contacting a local HVAC technical trade school to find out more information and the necessary requirements to become a HVAC technician in your area.

Best of Luck!

Carl’s Answer

Dear student,

Being an HVAC technician can be a stable source of providing for yourself and your family. Most states have technical colleges that are highly subsidized that can provide you with the training needed to become an HVAC. With that said, I would advise to search for technical colleges in your area and they will provide the requirements to become an HVAC technician. For example, I live in Atlanta, GA. We have schools such as Atlanta Technical College and Georgia Piedmont Technical College at little or no cost. I would highly recommend going this route if that is what you are interested in.

Carl recommends the following next steps:

Search for technical colleges in your area that have HVAC programs. That will give you the information you need on the requirements.
Visit those schools and talk to a representative to gather financial information, career prospects, and what is needed to get admitted.
Seek out an HVAC company in your area and ask to speak to a technician to get a first hand perspective on obstacles, benefits, and career paths.
