What does a private contractor do?

I am a freshman at Cal Poly Pomona majoring in Computer Information Systems. I would like to develop my technical skills but I am not quite sure where to start. Any advice would be helpful, thank you. #college

I remember being in a similar situation while in school. My advise would be to learn the basics of one current or up and coming programming language such as Python, C#, Haskell. Python is a good place to start. This programming language is now being used for many popular apps, websites and software by big companies. Go through tutorials and free materials online, even YouTube videos and play around to build small applications.

A private contractor, also known as an independent contractor, enters into a binding, contractual agreement with the employer as a sole entity. This means you work for yourself even though the employer has hired you to perform a service. Along with that you are required to complete a 1099 form with the Internal Revenue in addition to your income tax filing as the company does not pay you wages but pays your company. Computer Information Services is a great field to major in. You can do so much in that field. The world today has so much data and numbers out there, but we need people who can understand how to make sense of all the numbers. Of course learning a few computer languages are key such as Python. In addition you will need to develop a good understanding of business processes. You need to be able to work well in small teams and brain storm together to make projects work and meet deadlines. Many times contractors are hired for short term projects, they might have a specialty or expertise in and then they get hired into other companies to do the work. Many large companies are following a project management style called, Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), https://www.scaledagileframework.com/.
