when going for a msw is it better to get a clinical social work or a family and children focus if I want to have a group home. Considering some children may need to be diagnosed before entering the group home.

I was told that if I wanted to own a group home I would need to have experience working and dealing with children but someone recommended the clinical social work degree saying that it would include knowledge of childhood development and would give me more reach as a social worker. #social-work

Yandira’s Answer

Akthough my focus is not families and children I would recommend a Clinical track it is global and will give you the core clinical skills needed for any post graduate position. I would add - although you may not be interested in alcohol and substance abuse area now a days it is crucial to feel comfortable with getting comfortable with asking the right questions in this area.
Good luck!

Susan’s Answer

Group Homes are usually Run by a Health Care management company contracted by the State to run and manage the home. If you want to be in upper management, then Healthcare Administration or a Macro Social Work program tract would be most useful. To be the Director of a facility would ideally require at least a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Every State has different requirements. Group Homes serve many different clients; some serve troubled youth, others serve developmentally disabled adults, or the elderly. There is a lot of crossover, but if you would like to focus on a clinical private practice doing therapy, then a clinical program would be most appropriate. If you would like to work within a Social Service Agency that works with children, then a child/ family program is more applicable. Those who wish to work with elderly clients, a Gerontology tract is best. Best of luck!

Susan recommends the following next steps:

Explore Social Work Programs that offer a tract of study you want to focus your career. A Generalist Tract offers a little of everything.
Also explore schools that offer bridge to Masters Degree Programs, where you can go an extra year and earn your Masters Degree. Management positions and being able to bill insurance companies for your services independently (private practice) requires the highest level of license, a Masters Degree is required.
