How long does it take to get your phD to become a doctor?

Four years for medical school, a minimum of three years for residency, and a few more if you want to specialize with a fellowship. Oh, and when you graduate you are a Doctor of Medicine, not a PhD.

Thank you comment icon Some schools give you the option of pursuing both your MD/DO and a PhD. A MD/DO is a clinical doctorate whereas a PhD is a research doctorate. Nick Collins, MS, RN, CNS

All specialties require 4 years of college and 4 years of medical school. Next follows residency.
3-year residencies:
Family Medicine
Internal Medicine
Pediatrics
4-year residencies:
OB/GYN
Orthopedics
Pathology
5-year residencies:
Surgery
Radiology
6-year residencies:
Urology
Neurosurgery
