Should I apply for jobs above my experience range, just in case, or always play it safe?

When applying for jobs after college, should I just stick to low key positions, or put on a courageous stance and try to prove myself? Is it better to work your way up the ladder, or demand respect? #career #job

John’s Answer

Hi Ciara,

Pretty much every job description will have "minimum requirements" and "preferred requirements". If your experience does not satisfy all of the minimum requirements (and some of the preferred), then I would not apply to the role. You will likely be screened out, and if you do interview, will likely not move forward in the process. It is a better use of your time, and the companies time, if you stick to roles that you are objectively qualified for.

The exception to my answer above, would be if you know someone at that company that is referring you. I always encourage job seekers to network and try to establish inside connections at any company they are interested in.

Liza’s Answer

Sure....it never hurts to try. Be yourself and sell what is different about you than other applicants. You never know what the interviewer sees in you and decides to give it a try. As a manager I have hired people who do not have all the right skills but I saw something that says "try this person out". You also should balance those applications with those you know you are qualified for. Good luck!

Jaime’s Answer

You can do both. Humility is a great quality for all ages. Show you are willing to learn and follow through. You'll earn respect quickly and move up quickly.
