In my state one major university offers a 5 year degree in architecture, and the other major university offers a 4 year degree in architectural engineering. What are the major differences, and what type of salary range would I be facing after college?

Architecture and Architectural Engineering are two separate paths, though they can both lead to being a licensed architect.
An architect's role is to designs how the building will look and function for the users as well as ensuring local and state code requirements are met to ensure the building is safe. They act as Architectural engineers are responsible for designing the structure of the building along with the heating and cooling, electrical, and plumbing systems. Typically, architectural engineers will choose one of the above systems to specialize in and then become licensed in.
When it comes to becoming an licensed architect, there are many educational paths to get there. First, you must obtain either a Bachelor of Architecture degree or Master of Architecture degree in order to take the exams to be licensed. The Bachelor of Architecture degree may only be obtained through a 5 year program. It is treated as a professional degree similar to an MBA. Four year programs provide a Bachelor of Sciences or Bachelor of Arts in Architecture, but to become licensed you must then go on and complete a 2 year Masters degree. The Masters of Architecture degree can be obtained no matter what undergraduate degree you receive, such as a Bachelors of Sciences in Architectural Engineering, only the amount of time required to earn it will be different. Three years for any degree not associated with architecture, two years as mentioned above, or one for a Bachelor of Architecture degree.
Once you have completed your degree you will need to complete a series of tests to become a either a licensed professional engineer or architect along with an apprenticeship (always paid by law). I would recommend visiting www.ncarb.org for more information on the licensing process for architects.
