The advice I’d offer is make sure you have people in your life that support your work schedule. It would be tough to have family members need something from you during your “sleeping” time, or friends who constantly called to hang out when you have to work. The fear of missing out is real for some of us.

I have a friend that works as a 911 dispatcher; his shifts usually start at 7pm and end at 7am. It was a big adjustment at first, but he has good boundaries and support for his work/life balance. And we don’t make him feel guilty for missing out.

Marie’s Answer

I suspect you mean staying up because you are working night shift!
Once you find a schedule that works best for you in regards to sleeping, your body gets used to it.
I found that having light food as opposed to a big/heavy meal was better to help me stay awake.
The worst time was around 3 am, go take a brisk walk, drink some water. Shift will be over soon :)

Jami’s Answer

I worked five years as a night shift nurse. I used black out curtains and melatonin to sleep during the day. Staying up wasn't too bad because in the hospital there are other people up to talk to and lights are on. My biggest recommendation is to figure out how to sleep during the day. The hard part is the sleep, not staying awake. I will say nursing is a fun career and you are always busy so no worry about sitting around bored.
