What are some ways to gain work experience before applying for the medical field?

I enjoy studying science and math in school and I would like to put those skills to use in my career. I also like laboratory experiments and believe I can conduct a valid experiment to solve a problem. What are some available opportunities that focus around these interests for a high schooler?

Hi there! Here are some things I thought about after reading your questions:

✔️ Join a club - I know that in highschool there are plenty of clubs focused on different subjects. Maybe a chemistry club, for instance, would organize practical activities, or a math club would solve different complex problems that can enhance your skills.

✔️ Join a volunteering organization, or get involved in community activities. This really depends on location, an example would be Red Cross, which also organizes First-Aid courses that would help you in the medical field.

✔️ Take online courses. There are plenty of websites like Coursera, Khan Academy, Udemy etc. that offer courses for different domains, you can also find free ones there.

✔️ Participate in contests - they can be problem-solving contests, hackatons of all sorts, projects or essays. It's really up to what you enjoy most.

✔️ Look out for internships or trainings at companies that are available for highschoolers.

All of these activities can be used to enhance your CV especially when you've just started looking for careers.
I hope this helped, if you have additional questions don't hesitate to ask them in the comments! Good luck <3

Cameron’s Answer

While lab opportunities for high schoolers are more difficult to come by, several universities hold summer programs specifically designated for high school students like yourself! If you live near a college, university, or hospital, I would recommend looking on their websites for these programs. They are typically structured with an orientation to get you familiar with the school and/or lab environment, some lectures to teach you more about what you will be studying, and a mentor to guide you through your summer project.
Thank you comment icon Thank you Cameron; I appreciate the response. Getting familiar with the lab environment and the expectations will definitely relieve some stress if I continue to pursue my career in this direction. Rachel
