Estelle’s Answer

The amount of stress in the medical field definitely depends on the field you choose. Jobs in private practice offices tend to be less stressful compared to hospital positions. For example, working in emergency rooms can be very stressful compared to working in a surgeon's office checking patients in for preop and postoperative appointments. Working in a primary care clinic may be very busy but the patients are generally healthy and needs treatment for chronic or less emergent illnesses. All jobs have their stressful aspects, but jobs in the medical fields have the bonus of feeling the reward of helping people and improving quality of life.

Every field has its stresses and rewards. It's up to you how you respond or react to the stress. If you love the feel you have chosen, focus on what you enjoy about it. There will be coworkers and supervisors that will cause stress, but it's up to you to deal with the stress in a healthy way. Remember why you chose your profession, focus on becoming better at it, and learn to deal with stress in a healthy way. Every health professional that has come to my office for stress is usually dealing with the coworker stress or supervisor stress. You don't have to like every person you work with, but you would be advised to treat them with respect. You don't have to like your supervisor, but how you respond to them is about you, not about them.

Hi Taylor-

Every job will have it's stressors. What is most important is deciding which ones are important to you.

If you have found something you enjoy doing, you are less likely to feel weighed down by the stress of the job. If you are doing something you do not enjoy, you are more likely to feel stressed and overwhelmed.

As stressful as the medical field can be, it is even more rewarding. For every difficult situation, there is a heartful thank you or gesture of appreciation for a job well done. There are positives and negatives to all things, and finding fulfillment is going to require you to learn more about yourself. You are faced with a choice every day, to carry with you the good things in life, or the bad. If you are making the choice to focus on the good things, the bad don't seem nearly as bad.
