Kimberly’s Answer

Hi Seth,
Congratulations on setting such an impressive goal! My son did just this and graduated from USNA in 2020 and now is a Marine in flight school.

I will tell you more than anything else it is about determination and drive. My son was in the top 10% of his graduating class, lettered in a varsity sport all four years, volunteered like crazy, and was a great interview. He received a nomination and not the necessary appointment to go to after high school. He then accepted the ROTC scholarship for Navy and went to NC State. While his family was so happy, he pledged to complete the one-year application process to USNA again this time as a college freshman. As a freshman, he got all A's, was active in a club sport, and joined clubs within his major of engineering. In early December, he received a call from our congressman that he was awarded the number one spot of ten appointments. He entered USNA in the summer of 2016 as a plebe and, of course, credits do not transfer. He had 4 years ahead of him.

When he got there, it was tough! Those things that set you apart from the crowd are stripped away because you need to learn to follow without bias in order to lead. Fast forward, he will tell you now he had a phenomenal education sprinkled with so many opportunities in which he took advantage! Not as many want to lead as Marines, and Marine selection is based on prioritizing it over Navy. It is a small group. The Basic School in Quantico will be a requirement for you for 6 months. You will live outside for a week at a time in all weather among many other cruel and unusual tasks that a mother does not appreciate for her son!

With all this that I share, it is so very obvious to me that determination is what has created and sustained my son's Marine career. Good luck, Seth!

Kenneth’s Answer

Seth,

All admissions requirements can be found at https://www.usna.edu/Admissions/index.php

As a graduate of USNA, I can say that they highly value well rounded candidates: good grades, varsity sports, community service, and demonstrated leadership are the keys to receiving an appointment. They're not concerned with what you want to study. They want to know that you desire to lead Marines and Sailors in the Fleet.

At the beginning of your senior year, you will submit your preferences for what you want to do in the Fleet. To be selected as a Marine, you have to demonstrate, through your time at the Academy, that you want to be a Marine. I'm not sure what that process entails, but it does include an interview.

Good luck!

The training zone contains the main academic building complex, as well as physical-training, aquatics and outdoor-training complexes, auditoriums, a firing range, cadet’s Mess and cadet’s dormitories. The main academic building complex is situated on the highest point of the academy. It includes the Service and Technical Training wings, laboratories, workshops, library, and a 1800-capacity auditorium. The academy accepts up to 1200 cadets for officer-training each year. This includes officer-trainees from foreign countries, as well as interim training facilities for the Indian Coast Guard

Here are the ways in which you can join Naval Academy:

1.NDA/NA Entry: Through his only male candidates who are between the age of 16 ½ – 19 ½ years of age and have Physics and Math’s in 12th can apply. NDA cadets opting to join the Navy complete three years of joint training at NDA, Khadakwasla with the Army and Air Force cadets. They then transfer to INA for the next one year. Cadets have the option to major in Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture and are awarded a Bachelor of Technology degree upon graduation. Upon graduation, cadets are commissioned as Sub Lieutenants in the Navy. Cadets majoring in Naval Architecture have to undergo an additional 6 months of training at the Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam after graduation. They also have the option to enroll for additional post-graduate specialization in the field at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
2.Through 10+2 B.Tech Entry: This is a new entry of Navy. SSB calls are made directly to male candidates having the 12th percentage above the cutoff percentage. Selected Candidates will be inducted as Cadets for four year B Tech course in Electronics & Communication or Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala Kerala. During the course, Cadets will be allotted Executive or Engineering including Naval Architect specialization or Electrical Branch. On completion of the course, B Tech Degree will be awarded by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
3.Through CDSE: Male graduates who have B.Sc. with Physics & Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineering can apply for Naval Academy (See CDSE Eligibility for details). The written exam consists of objective type paper having Math’s, English and GK. The successful candidates of written exam are called for SSB and further for medicals.
4.Other Graduate Entries: Through this graduates and final year students (Pre final year sometimes for UES as well) can apply. There is no written test, the calls are directly made for SSB based on cut-off percentage of the qualifying exam. There are many entries for all types of graduates in Indian Navy. However you have to keep a watch on the advertisement of the applications, which can easily do if you are in touch with our website, since we publish the notifications as soon as they are released.
