Hello Taleah-

It can be tricky!

You need to reserve time for the
Non-negotiables. You obviously have school, homework and sleep that come first. Then you have to think about what else you need to do for your mental and physical health. You also have friends. Do you have to work? Try to do it on the weekend- work and school during the week sometimes gets too complicated.

I am a very early riser which allows me to get some work done before the distractions start. That could be helpful- even if it is only an hour a day, that is five hours a week!

It is very important that you stay organized and disciplined- you will be amazed how much you can actually do in 168 hours a week!

Best of luck to you- I’m sure you will do well!

Ricci
Thank you comment icon Thanks for this comment, it’s very interesting because my mother also said a similar thing. Managing my time & responsibilities is something that I will have to work on for my future and I have to start now, especially for the line of business I want to pursue. Taleah

Hi Taleah--

This is a great question, especially for someone who is so early in their professional years. I am currently working a full-time position at Verizon, pursuing my MBA in HR management and also trying to balance my personal life with my friends and family. My best advice is to ensure that you set aside time for all of these obligations each week. I try to schedule my week in advance so that I know which days I am free and which ones I need to block off for my work. For example, if you know that you have school on Monday until 3 PM, have work at 5PM and have a test the next day, you may want to start studying for the test over the weekend or as soon as you find out about it. This way, you can go to school and work, and if you need to study a little more that night you are able to, but have done the majority of your studying prior to the week. Another tactic I use is scheduling my time with friends and family in advance so I know when my free time is. It is also important to know when it is okay to say no to friends because you are professionally developing yourself in the meantime. Best of luck!
Thank you comment icon I found your comment very interesting as I do have to work on saying no. Though I don’t have a lot of friends, I do need to position myself with a business women mindset and make time for myself and work. Time management is something important to work on also Thanks for your comment Taleah

Hi Taleah! Having a part-time job while in high school was rewarding and at times, may be a bit challenging. What you would need to ask yourself is, do you have the time to take on a part-time job while studying? In addition to school work, are you involved in any extra curricular activities after school, such as sports, volunteer work, etc.? These are things that need to be factored in. Time management is key here. As I was a part of the men's volleyball team back in my high school days, I was not able to work that much during the weekdays, as I factored in school work and study time; however, during the weekends, I was able to work and earn money.

Hi! Thanks for your question. My biggest piece of advice for balancing everything in your life is developing time management skills. A great way to do this is by setting up and time and day every week where you plan out your week and the upcoming month. This way you know everything that’s coming your way and can put in deadlines or important events. I find that this has been so helpful during my college career. Hope this helps!

At this point in your life, it's important to keep in mind that school is your priority and it is your job. Do you really need to work? If so, planning and time management will be essential. But if there isn't a compelling reason for the income, being active in leadership positions or positive activities is great for your college resume. You owe it to yourself to enjoy your high school time and do high school things! Soon enough, you will find yourself working -- for 40 or more years!

Hi Taleah! It's great to think about your work life balance so early in your education, because as time goes on and your responsibilities start to build up, you will need to find more time to equally share among your priorities.
School is always a priority, and your job can supplement your income to help with school expenses. But at this early point of your career, it's great to think about what kinds of jobs you can have alongside with school, that can teach you some valuable work experience and move you into a career long term. Not every job is ultimately going to be your long term career, but it can help guide you on what skills you can learn and ultimately become your career interest.
My suggestion would be to build a calendar for yourself on a weekly basis. You can do this on your phone and set times and reminders so you stay on top of everything.Prioritize school, and have your job schedule set for specific days and times where you can work part time and still complete your school tasks. Even if your job is part time, think of the connections you can make there. Some of them can be long term references that will help you network into other jobs, and they can also support your school schedule.
