Is teaching a good choice for me

Thank you comment icon As a former educator of 30 years, I realized that you have to have patience, the ability to laugh at yourself and with your students, and an overwhelming feeling of nurturing others. I found my quest for knowledge to be one of my greatest skills. Creativity (thinking outside the box) was one of the skills I used daily. It helped me challenge my students and allowed them to see multiple sides to issues. If you are interested in making a lot of money then teaching is definitely not a profession I would get into. My mom was an elementary school teacher and I would see how much effort she would put in to everything she did. She spent a lot of time making sure she was prepped and ready to go. She spent weekends lesson planning and creating. She loved everything about it and loved every single child that she taught, even the difficult ones.

I don't have the patience to teach child and I always told myself that I would never be a teacher. It is not something I am able to do. Well, fast forward after high school, I am working for a technology company and I become a corporate trainer. I never thought that I would be able to train and teach people. I still don't think that I have the patience for it, but with adult learners in a corporate environment, that provides a ton of training and development opportunities for me to constantly improve and grow, I love it!

Teaching, or training in my case, is easy and fun when you have the right support structure in place from the company you choose to work for. Training technical support and networking has been such a fun thing to do and also something completely unexpected for me. Training customer service and leadership principles was also something I never thought I would love doing and being so passionate about. Now I get to lead a team of trainers and certify other training teams.

My advice would be, find something that you love to teach and go into that field. There are so many opportunities out there. I could never teach a class of 24 children, but I could do a classroom of 40 adults and even do it virtually without any hesitation. Teaching can be redundant and you may teach the same topic multiple times. The content should not matter if you love the topic and have a passion to see people grow and succeed. You have to love what you are teaching or you will get burnt out and lose interest very quickly.

Hi Nikki,

For some, teaching is a calling. For others, it is innate skill that leads them to teaching. You need to consider why you are thinking about teaching. Why do you want to teach? What would you want to teach? Teaching can be rewarding. That reward will come in different ways. You need to consider your thoughts on what is rewarding. For me, the coolest thing as a teacher was seeing when the student understood - they got it. When you teach someone a skill that they will have from that moment on, it is a great thrill. And it can be equally frustrating when you don't get through to a student. You can always blame yourself for a student not learning and not reward yourself for the successes. You are often more successful than failing, but failure can be hard to take. Your challenge as a teacher is making sure to balance yourself. Do your best and know that you are not going to reach everyone. You reach more than you miss, so it is definitely worthwhile.

It depends on if you like watching people learn and grow. You also need to ensure that you have patience as every did is different and dealing with parents is not always easy.

It depends. If you enjoy working with other people, if you like preparing for classes, if you are humble enough to be willing to learn for your students, then yes, teaching may be a good choice for you.

Like others, I'd be interested to know more about why you're considering teaching and what questions you have about it. I'm not a teacher but I lead a team responsible for employee training at Eventbrite (which has a music division) and I noticed the combination of hashtags on your question so I'd encourage you to think about how to combine your interests- if teaching, music and leadership are all interesting to you, you might consider looking into internal training and development in a company related to music.

I believe the most important thing in choosing a career path is finding something that excites you, challenges you, and rewards you. Sometimes it will do all of these things at the same time.


Find something you are passionate about and run with it! Find something that gives you fulfillment and reminds you regularly of your worth. For every individual these things will be different, but if you feel this way about teaching, go for it!

Teaching is a very good art. If you are passionate about teaching you should do it. Not many can do good in teaching. You need to talk to students, make them understand and be interactive. you really need to have leadership and managerial skills.. In this era you have many ways of teaching. Virtual classrooms, through online class rooms. It is much difficult i feel than the normal ones. So try to learn the art of teaching first and experience it.
