Its a a interesting subject as my son is in this industry as well. I always tell him first of all have clear vision, understand what it takes to direct a movie esp. animated movie. Learn as much as you can by attending courses and YouTube has abundant of resources. If you want to direct, have a clear vision which can be shared with the team and decentralize your work. Give ownership to people in your team by empowering them. You need to be able to trust your department heads. You don't want to micromanage. Animation work is tedious & requires some amount of patience. Even if you're starting with motion capture, there is a lot of detailed work that needs to be done in an animated film. You're going to be on that project for quite a while. You have to have patience, knowing that you’re going to have an awesome product when you're done. Pay attention to details like Foley, sound effects, lighting, camera angles, and an actor’s delivery. I recommend not to wait until the entire thing is done. Be Lean & Agile like we are in technology. The more you fix along the way the better.
