Ryan’s Answer

Opening a homeless shelter is a meaningful goal. After completing your bachelor’s degree, you’ll want to focus on legal readiness, operational experience, funding, and community partnerships. You will want to gain relevant experience. Before opening a shelter, hands-on experience is critical. You should volunteer or work at homeless shelters, NGOs / nonprofits, social services organizations, or community outreach programs. Here, you will learn case management basics, crisis intervention, mental health & substance-use referral processes, safeguarding and trauma-informed care.

You will also want to formal knowledge of how shelters operate legally. Some key areas to study are nonprofit management, public administration, social work fundamentals, charity law & governance, human rights and housing policy. Some helpful courses / certificates are nonprofit management and social work or community development certificates.
Some other important things are understanding licensing, zoning and regulations. Additionally, a good business plan is important and securing Funding and Resources.

Patricia’s Answer

Build as much experience as you can volunteering or working for a homeless shelter while you're still in school. What new or innovative programs do you want to provide at your homeless shelter? Do you need to create your own or can you implement and scale these programs at existing shelters? Shadow an Executive Director of a homeless shelter to see what a day in their shoes looks like. Explore graduate degree programs like Masters in Social Work, Masters in Business, and Nonprofit Management.
