Kyrie’s Answer

Phlebotomy is considered a healthcare career but does not require a nursing license. Phlebotomy is solely the drawing of blood. Most require at least a certificate in phlebotomy which is a 3-6 month course at the longest

in addition to the above - it's a great idea to add phlebotomy (and EKG) to your skills if you're a CNA or MA. you'll qualify for a lot more jobs. if you want to proceed to school for nursing later, you'll be way ahead of the game.

Joshua’s Answer

There is a related nurse field! While phlebotomy is not nursing, my hospital has a team of IV nurses. They start difficult and ultrasound guided IVs, insert larger lines(PICCs, midlines), and do management of existing lines. They are very specialized, very professional, and very useful in an emergency. They also do the phlebotomy when our phlebotomy teams cant get a stick.

Thomas’s Answer

Phlebotomy is part of Allied health and in most hospitals is considered part of the Laboratory. they are responsible for collecting all types of specimens from patients and depending on skill level and experience can perform some laboratory testing. which is used by the doctor in diagnosing and treatment of patients.

A nurse is a medical professional that directly cares for a set of patients depending on relevant skills, licensure, and state laws and assists doctors in the course of treatment of patients.

while both are healthcare, they are different facets of patient care.

Justin’s Answer

Phlebotomy is not a type of nursing. It is rather a skill/specialty that nurses are licensed and qualified to perform. In other words, phlebotomy is practically about drawing blood and it is a skill that nurses can do. But in order to do so, one must have a phlebotomy license and in the nurse's case, it is generally expected that the nurse has a license that allows them to perform these blood draws.
