What is a typical day like in Elevator & Escalator Installers & Repairers?

Hi Javelle,

I love this as a job for some people. There are jobs, often called, "Trades" or "The Trades" like Elevator Installers and Repair that pay well and don't require going to college. I have an elevator in my house. And I've had it repaired several times. So, I'm happy to share what I observed.

Typically, one gets a job in this business by apprenticing or being a helper for an experience repairperson first. Then as you learn you to more and more until you go on jobs alone, perhaps with your own helper. Elevators deal with mechanical, electrical and a bit of computers these days. There are usually a small number of tools you might expect in any toolboxes like screw drivers and such.

I do recommend going to college for business while you apprentice. College might not be for you, but the extra education will help when you want to be a manager of the repair people or perhaps even the business owner someday. Your lifetime earnings statistically will be double if you get a 4-year degree. Doesn't mean you have to sit in an office your whole career. You can still get out there and work with your hands.
