Hi David,
To become a lawyer I studied law (with other subjects) at college and university. I took all of the prerequisites required after I talked to a counselor. I studied non stop for years and I got a Law degree in the end. I studied for the bar online and passed. While at college and university I worked in my own grocery business. I also worked for the local doctors and I volunteered with the Army. I branched out while studying law when I learnt how to sew and cook for my foreign language degree.

There are many different flavors of legal career and the profession attracts a wide range of people. The people who succeed and enjoy their work often share the following traits: (1) a desire to focus on honing a technical skill over a long period of time and (2) love of research and analysis.
The first thing to do to prepare well before law school is to understand what specific paths within the career would be a good fit for you. (A law degree is expensive in terms of both time and money, so it pays to find out BEFORE applying if you legal work is not for you.) The type of work lawyers do and the money they can earn vary so much that it is not useful to think of it as one path, but really a collection of paths. Learn the details about the career paths that are most common among graduates of law schools that you have a good chance of admission to. Research the compensation for these paths as well.
Doing internships is a great way to learn more about what legal work is like. Local nonprofits and government agencies are a good place to start. One benefit of working in a public-interest organization is that you may be able to forge closer connections to potential mentors based on your shared values and interest in the mission.
