I did not have any law-related jobs during my college education. I was interested in law but upon graduation, I accepted an offer to teach math and ecology at a private high school. I took the LSAT 10 years later and went to law school. I did an internship as part of law school and also worked for a large law firm during my first summer, which firm I went to work for upon graduating from law school. I do not believe you need any prior legal experience to attend law school, although it could certainly be helpful.

Yes! I was undecided about what I wanted to pursue in college initially. I ended up graduating with a double major in Business Management and Law/Government. I did 3 internships in college (we were required to do at least 1 before graduation). I did 1 related to the business field (wealth management intern) and 2 related to the legal field (legislative intern and legal intern at a law firm in the area). I think those experiences helped shape my decision to go to law school after I graduated. It was also a great networking opportunity!

However, I will say, my sister was the opposite and did not do internships in the field she ultimately ended up in. She initially went for Business Management (like me) and decided to pursue a Master’s in Counseling Psychology.

Overall, I believe it does not hurt to explore internships in college since these opportunities can help determine whether something is right for you or not. For me, it solidified my decision to go to law school. For my sister, she decided what she thought she wanted was not for her and chose something else that makes her very very happy!

I worked as a legal assistant at a firm while finishing my undergraduate degree. It was not a place I saw myself at forever, but I needed a more stable income and a way to bulk up my resume. Now I work at a litigation firm while going to law school. Like Robert said, you certainly do not need legal experience before entering law school. But I will say that it is never too early to start networking with attorneys if you choose to pursue law.

Hi Camila,
I had numerous jobs while at University and College. I was a tutor during my college years.I tutored at the local church and schools in the area. I also was a volunteer for the city I lived in. I had a full time job working in the local business which lasted 12 years. I also was a doctors assistant on the side. My summer job was working at a fashion based non profit. These jobs taught me discipline as well as how to organize my time.
