Hi! So the process of becoming a surgeon typically follows as

4 years Bachelor's

4 years Medical School

5 years residency for general surgery


Then if you want to specialize it may take more years for the residency. Then after that you can work in the setting of your choice related to your field! Hope this helps!

In the US, to apply to medical school, you need a bachelor's degree. Any 4-year university should suffice.

Pick a major that interests you so you don't mind devoting a majority of your hours to studying. You will need to get good grades in college in order to apply for medical school. At the medical school I attended, the average GPA is reported to be 3.85, so even one or two B's can hurt your chances of acceptance.

Aside from this, any major is acceptable as long as you complete the prerequisite courses.

Typical medical school prerequisites include:
Biology: Lecture – 4 semesters; Lab – 1 semester
General Chemistry: Lecture – 2 semesters; Lab – 1 semester
Organic Chemistry: Lecture – 2 semesters; Lab – 1 semester
Biochemistry: Lecture – 1 semester
General Physics: Lecture – 2 semesters; Lab – 1 semester
Math: Statistics – 1 semester
English: Rhetoric (Composition) and Literature – 2 semesters

Medical school takes 4 years to complete followed by 5 years of residency for general surgery then fellowship for 1-3 years if you want to specialize.

During medical school you have a chance to observe and participate in the practice of multiple specialties. Early during the 4th year you choose a specialty and apply to a residency. After interviews, you rank the programs according to which seems best for you. The programs in turn rank the applicants. Then in March, the results are sent to the applicants on "match day". The surgery residency lasts 5 years. The 1st year resident, or intern, has the least autonomy. As the residents gain skill and knowledge they are given more responsibility and begin to perform more critical portions of each procedure.
