How can I learn Korean by myself?

I am fan of K-pop. I usually watch Korean drama after fansub group translate it but it needs to wait for a long time. So, I want to learn Korean but I don't have enough money to attend Korean classes. Are there some approaches help me learn Korean by myself? #language #korean #foreign-languages

Thank you comment icon I have been using an app called duolingo it helps me so much with learning Japanese it’s a free app that’s available for iOS and android and it is free to download you can choose from lots of languages to learn! Nicole

I am using an app D<span style="background-color: rgb(253, 253, 253);">uolingo to learn German </span> (on windows mobile). I have checked and Korean is also available. you can start with this.

As you mentioned that you watch Korean drama. Pick-up a translation in English, try to write it in Korea, take Google Help. Go back to Drama and see how near you are. Start with small sentences.

BTW, I also love Korean Drama and Love it.

I'm Korean and living in Korea and I've met many foreigners who can speak Korean better than me, and I found that those kind of people literary fall in love Korean culture, like K-pop or K-drama, same as you. I believe you can study Korean all by yourself through many Korean contents you're interested in. Further, if you can have Korean friend, that will be the best short cut you can master Korean.

Hi Jiayun, good to know you'd like to learn Korean but may feel difficulty by yourself since English and Korean are totally different in order of words, characters etc.
Let's suppose how Korean learns English by themselves. Probably a tutor helps you improve it but it costs.

My suggestion would be watching K-drama with subtitle first but avoid any historical one - there are too much difficult old language that Korean now doesn't use.
Also try to find a Korean church or offline community nearby your home - When I lived in the UK long time ago, I went to a local church to listen to English worship, people there also were so kind and supportive to teach me English.

Keeping a diary everyday in Korean helps you improve your Korean skill as well. Do a small thing first and keep doing everyday even for 30 minutes per day.

If time available, Korea government have many support for foreign to learn Korean, online language centre can talking with them.
I have been Seoul ewha university, their course very useful and interesting. watch more Korean drama and Kpop to understand trend.

Hi Jiayun, I am a Korean teacher and online tutor, and many of my students have the same question as you. I suggest looking into the following and choosing something that suits you.

1. Join an online group that is wanting to learn Korean. You will find other people trying to learn Korean, who will be more than willing to help you with your studies. My suggestions will be sites like reddit, discord servers dedicated to language learning, facebook groups etc.

2. Language exchange. You can find plenty of people who would want to be proficient in your native language, who already speak Korean. On the sites that I have mentioned above, you can find people who will be willing to do a 1-for-1 language exchange where you help the other person with English(or another language) and they can help you with Korean.

3. Invest in a textbook. Talk to me in Korean is a well known resource that is great for beginners learning the language. Their podcast is free which goes great with their book.

4. Follow Korean youtube channels. Whether it be educational or lifestyle vloggers, most of these channels will have English and Korean subtitles. Find one that you like, and watch&study them frequently.
