What's the procedure to go into research in the field of astronomy?

Hi Vicky,
Astronomy is a great choice! Absolutely fascinating topic. I know this is a bit late and I hope you've gotten a good head start on things. The path to research in astronomy can be split fairly distinctly into undergrad and postgrad:
Undergrad: You will want to pick a relevant major (physics, astrophysics, astronomy, etc.) first and foremost and of course do well in it (easier said than done but very possible if you're passionate). In undergrad, try to get involved in research either directly or tangentially related to astro (any of the above, math, stat, etc.), but don't limit your experiences to that. Try to get involved in volunteer work, professional organizations, and potentially social organizations if you're interested. Not only does this let you have a better time in school, but it also helps your CV for grad school applications. Junior or senior year you will want to take the GRE general, physics, and math exams, then start applying to whichever grad schools you like.
Grad School: Grad school is all about research, so get ready for 4-7 years of rigorous coursework and tireless research. There isn't too much else to it, but once you're finished you'll be ready for a post-doc position where you will start truly diving into the type of astro research you're likely interested in.

You definitely want to get started with maths and sciences to build a good base! Then as you become more skilled here you can begin to specify with introductory physics courses and biology/ chemistry. Once in college you can actually specify for Astronomy! Florida State University (Alma mater!) Offers a great meteorology and astronomy school. Never lose your curiousity and don't be afraid to follow your interests!
