How can I start a career in the music industry as a vocalist ?

I agree with Sarah Louise's suggestion to perform as often as possible. Assuming you are interested in pop music instead of classical, I'll make the following recommendations.

1) Take lessons of some sort. Whether this is at school or with a private teacher, you need vocal training. Very few great singers are untrained, even in pop music. Further, poor technique can lead to vocal injuries, especially when you're performing a lot.

2) Learn music theory. Singers often try to get by with their ear. However, anyone who is serious about music should know how music works.

3) Find a band and gig. You don't have to be good yet. The ability to perform is a learned skill. You want to be very good at performing and playing with a band. The only way to develop competency in this area is to simply dive in and try.

4) Learn piano. Piano is a great instrument to learn. It helps one "see" music a bit better (ie, the way chords are stacked, the relationship between the melody and the chord structure, harmonies, etc). If you choose to study music in college, you'll probably have to pass a piano proficiency test. Learn now, that way you don't waste precious time in college on learning a second instrument.

5) Write music. If you want to play pop, you need to learn to write. Singers are often expected to be songwriters. It is in your best interest to be a singer/songwriter, not just a singer. You'll be a source of songs and vocals to future bands, instead of simply vocals.

My advice would be to get as many performances under your belt as possible at open mic nights, talents shows, karaoke contests to get some experience singing in public and build confidence. There are many ways to get yourself out there. You can search for auditions in the city for musicals to gain experience and exposure, or join a band (many local papers seeking musicians). The more practice you get the better :)
I got started by getting as much experience as I could in different bands and open mic nights. I joined a band part time to help build confidence and my skill level, and also for pure love and fun. The more exposure you get and open mic nights you attend, the more lines you will open up out there in the industry. I have had the pleasure of meeting many talents people and collaborating in several different music ventures.

I would also recommend getting a vocal coach and possibly an agent to not only help you perfect your craft but to also guide you in the right direction. They may also have leads on different types of vocal jobs....such as voice work, jingles, and for recording music for an album.

While you are still in highschool it's a good idea to try and get involved in as many performances as you can! Try and set something up where you can perform for your friends and you can put it on youtube. Lots of people in highschool also start bands. Surf the internet and look for highschool music competitions, trust me there are loads!
In terms of college and the future, you have to decide whether you want music to be your entire life, or if you want music to be on the side. If music is your true passion, then you should look at music schools in the world that fit your style best! If you're interested in keeping music as a hobby, then you could go to virtually any college and minor in Music.
