Is there such thing as a stable art career?

My most emotionally invested passions include different artistic forms, such as theatre, acting, and visual arts. I'm contemplating pursuing one of these fields as a career, but have been warned that going to college and studying any of these for a major is financial suicide. There's never any guarantee that you'll be able to get a job in that field, at least, that's what I've been taught. Is that really the case? Is it worth studying in college? #art #fine-art #acting #theatre

Is it silly to want to be a professional actress?

Something that I have always wanted to do was perform; from ballet to cheerleading and various kinds of acting, even putting up vlogs on YouTube, it has always been something in the back of my mind despite being shy and due to extenuating circumstances could never really be a part of. On the other hand, something that was brought to my attention from one of my friends and my school counselor was the idea that becoming a child and teen psychologist is also something that appeals to me; also, there is the slight pull of being a child lawyer (which especially flares up when I watch things like Escaping Polygamy and Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath). These seem to be connected in my mind because they are all about helping people in some way. While it’s strange to some, I was helped through some tough times by fictional characters and the actors that brought them to life in a sense. I want to be that person to someone else, not to mention I just enjoy being characters instead of myself, which greatly helps me when I write stories. If I can help someone by getting someone out of a terrible situation, either by providing them with a sort of escape in fiction, letting them deal with inner demons or literally removing them from a toxic lifestyle, then I think I would be happy. Should I pursue acting as a career and take acting classes or should I follow the more stable path of psychology? Even if I decide to act for a living, I’m nineteen and haven’t done much work in that field. Would taking classes help people in the field even take me seriously? #acting #voice-acting #psychology #counseling-psychology

Is it better to audition with dancing or without dancing?

I am looking to apply to several colleges for musical theater, but I am not the best dancer. I can sort of follow a choreographer, but I'm not as precise as many other people and I'm afraid that my dancing may be the make or break point for accepting me into their university. One of my closest friends who did get into a college for musical theater did tell me that they start you from the basics anyways in college, regardless of how well or how bad you did at the auditions, and that they just want to see potential for growth. 1) Is that true? And 2) is it better for me to audition for a college that only requires my stronger points (which is singing and acting) or to a college that I may not get into because someone is a better dancer than me? Also, how big of a part does the interview play? Is it a major deciding factor? Is it often that the acceptance team will like a person so much that they would disregard a specific lack of something? Much advice is appreciated! #musical-theatre #college #college-admissions #college-major #college-bound #dance #music #acting

What are the odds of me making in in musical theater?

Hey there! Currently a high school senior about to make the biggest decision of my life. Since I was a little girl, I have been in love with performing (seriously, I loved to sing linkin park all the time when I was two.) When I got into middle school and got my first supporting role, I knew thats what I wanted to do. It was my passion, what I looked forward to every day after school, especially so, as I am an honors student. But, as I'm getting ready to apply, and maybe audition for colleges, I'm starting to wonder if it is really worth it. I know I have potential, for sure, but is it really enough to get me to the top? My strongest suit is my singing and music. I have been taking music theory classes for about three years now and have been in choir classes since the fourth grade. I adore music with all of my heart. Only problem is that I haven't taken any acting or dance classes. I can follow a choreographer pretty well, but ask me to freestyle and I freeze up. My acting skills, I'm not to worried about, but I'm scared my singing has been more of a handicap in our school's shows. Of course I've been the lead in our drama club's shows for the past two years, but that's just the problem; 1) I haven't faced true rejection yet and 2) My school doesn't have drama classes. I don't know anything about real world auditions, along with other things people learn in Theater I and II. All I know is that I love the thrill of performing and just being able to showcase my talents and share the joy of musical theater to people who, like me currently, truly appreciate the art of theater. My stepmom is a pretty successful celebrity makeup artist, however. She's done many people's makeup and has very good relations with celebrities like Steve Martin and Edie Brickell (who wrote the 2016 tony nominated broadway show, Bright Star) and Anna Camp, amongst many others. Of course it's rude of her to talk to them still and ask favors, but the kind of influencial people that she has gathered due to her cliental may see one of the many videos she posts of me performing. This may give me a slight edge in the industry. However, this alone probably isn't enough to get me in. I just want to know if it is really realistic for me to make it on broadway. I don't care about the money or fame. I don't even care if its on or off or even off-off broadway. As long as I am performing for people, I'll be happy. I know there are certainly risks to take, but I want to know the odds of me being able to do what I love most for the early years of my life. Thank you so much for sticking to this and reading the whole thing. Any advice is seriously appreciated and taken into consideration! #theater #broadway #broadway-musicals #acting #dance #singing

How do i balance acting and law school?

Hey! So I am completely torn apart... I'm about to finish school and have already applied to one of the best law schools, but now I have doubts... I don't know if i am making a mistake by pursuing such a time consuming career that I find amazing and inspiring, but has been on my mind for just one year. I find myself doubting this matter, because whenever i watch a musical or even a movie i feel devastated since i left acting school a few years ago since my parents made me chose between acting ( which i had just begun) or horseback riding ( that i was doing for the longest time ). I feel like i choose horses over acting, because i had been doing it for my whole life and it was in my comfort zone. But i had so much fun while acting, singing and dancing. I had only started and maybe wasn't amazing, but i definetly felt in my element. Also the coaches there encouraged me and truly believed in my talent. So, again, whenever i watch a musical i feel like that is what i am made for. I sing everyday and know all the lyrics. I even act parts out :') I don't care if i get famous or not, i just want to do what i feel passionate about. At the same time i have only done acting 6 months and i feel like maybe i don't know the full story. So my question is : should i pursue both things or should i go against my parents will and focus only on acting? I feel like college may feel like an obligation that my parents taught me about. Any advice? #career #law #acting #singing #creative #musical-theatre

How can i become an actress at 24 when i have a degree in engineering?

I've always wanted to become an actress but since I was academically strong, I chose engineering. However my passion hasn't died down but I don't have much experience either. I'm also an Indian female from South Africa and I haven't had the financial means to pursue acting even as a hobby. I wanted to know am I too late to pursue this? And I don't know how to actually start and how to get going with this? I'm also not employed at the moment (graduate jobs for engineering is scarce) so finances are still a strain. I would appreciate any advice and information. Thank you. #psychology #acting #performing-arts #drama

How much does your physical appearance matter in the entertainment industry?

It seems most advertising/media features people with bodies that don't represent the general public. I know every person is different, but one body type seems to be the dominant factor. For women and girls, the media believes they should be thin and pretty. For men and boys, they need to be very muscular. If I, (and frankly a lot of other people) don't live up to these expectations, would I not be financially successful in this industry? #acting #actor #body-image

How to Narrow Down Choices?

I love doing everything, writing, singing, golfing, drawing, acting, designing (mostly characters), playing video games. But I want to do *everything*. Voice acting, pro golfing, novelist, concept artist. I'm having trouble narrowing down my loves and making them into careers and getting the options to just three things. I sometimes have it planned, but then I turn right around and start wanting to choose something else instead.
