How do I get a job out of college as an account manager? What makes a successful advertising account manager?

I am graduating in December 2018 with a degree in Advertising from San Jose State University. I want to work in account management/client services in an advertising agency after graduation. I have a bit of familiarity with what this role entails and what the advertising industry is like. However, I would love to hear first hand from professionals. I want to start honing in on skills that will make me a competitive candidate as I enter the job market. Any advice is appreciated. How do I move to a different job market?

I am based in the SF Bay Area. I am considering to move out of it after I graduate college with a degree in advertising. Some places I am considering are Seattle, Austin, Portland, or Los Angeles. I love the Bay Area but its really expensive to live here. I eventually want to get my own place without having to spend an absurd amount of money on rent or live with a lot of roommates. I am totally down to relocate but I need some advice on how I should go about doing that. How do I show recruiters and employers that I am willing to relocate? Any tips or related advice about relocating would be super helpful! Thank you! #job-search #business #marketing-and-advertising #advertising #relocation #job-search-strategies #travel #business-development #sales

What are the main points to remember when designing an advertisement?

If animation doesn’t work out I would like to work with advertising. Designing logos for companies, working with banners, just so I can still have to access in my work to create. In all honesty though I don’t know a lot about advertising. I’m just wanting advice on stuff to remember if I do go out in the field. #advertising #art

How many internships is too many?

I am currently a sophomore in college; advertising major and event management minor. I had my first internship at a small marketing/ad agency last summer and have been working there part time ever since. I'm happy to be working in my industry already and would love to stay with this company trough my college career, but would also love to get more internships under my belt with different agencies/companies. Should I plan for another next summer? Or should I wait until I'm an upper division student? I worry too many internships may be a bad thing but I have no idea. Thanks! #advertising #marketing #internships #undergrad #event-management

Are Udacity Nanodegrees in Digital Marketing worth it? Does it increase my employment chances?

I see some billboards around the Bay Area and Facebook/Instagram ads about this program. I am currently a senior at SJSU studying advertising. I am starting to plan for my life post college. Is double majoring in marketing and finance a good idea?

I want to kind of work on both sides of marketing. Such as the creative side and the number side. I originally had a minor in art studio to be able to take some graphic design classes but that doesn't fit with my schedule. Do you think a double major in those two areas will help along with learning graphic design on my own time? Are there any suggestions on how to learn graphic design on your own? #finance #marketing #graphic-design #advertising #marketing-and-advertising

Why is journalism dying and what are the skills of a competent journalist?

There are some great journalists who work for The Atlantic, The New York Times, and other sources. I was talking to a friend the other day about potential careers and she said I may be a journalist. She thinks that we need GOOD journalists; not just people who write about pop culture. I do agree with that. Journalism is dying because of the internet but how can we bring it back? Journalists have guts and make the INVISIBLE, VISIBLE. This is a good example: https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/09/amtrak-conductor/499664/ "You just learn so much from people in general by working the train. The railroad is kind of like a microcosm of society."~David Pryor. A unique perspective of how someone views a railroad... How do I get good at cold calling?

I am a student at San Jose State. I just recently started on the advertising staff of our newspaper the Spartan Daily. My job is to cold call local businesses and have them place ads in the paper. I am comfortable talking on the phone so that is not a problem. However, I would love to learn some methods on how to close some deals and make some sales. I have come close to closing some deals and other businesses show no interest at all. I think I need to re-evaluate my approach. I would love to improve and become better at cold calling. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks! #business #marketing #advertising #marketing-and-advertising #sales #cold-calling

If I switched my major from Econ to Advertising. Would this increase or decrease my chances a getting a good job after college? I would love to hear from professionals in the Advertising and Marketing industries.

I am currently an Economics major and an Advertising minor. However I was thinking of switching those around to a Major in Advertising and a minor in Economics. I am interested in working in the marketing and/or advertising industry but I am open to working other industries (business operations, HR, sales, maybe finance.) But also I am worried about job security post college. I would love to get some input on this before I make any important decisions. Thank you! :) #college #career-counseling #marketing #economics #advertising

Every company needs a publicity team. When recruiting new employees for such a task, what major usually appeals most to employers (Advertising or Public Relations)?

All my life I have wanted to represent companies with with press and Advertising, but so few colleges have advertising as a major. Whenever I say I want to go into advertising, adults wince. For these reasons I am a little hesitant to pursue this major. It would be so nice to hear from people who graduated with an advertising major and had to find jobs afterwards. #advertising
