Two questions on choosing a career and college/university.

I will graduate from a community college in Spring 2023 with an accounting degree. I plan on working for 2-3 years and then going back to school. I regret that I did not spend more time researching degrees, doing HS internships, or exploring different community colleges while in high school. However, I feel that I made a good choice in choosing accounting for my associates. Before I return to school, I want to take a lot of time researching colleges, careers, job opportunities, etc. before I make my decision. One thing going to college has taught me is to be open, flexible, and to accept the challenges/surprises that life throws at us. I would appreciate answers/advice for these two questions: 1.) How should I go about researching colleges/universities? One article recommended that I research application process, admission rate, accreditation, graduation rate, support services, scholarships, degree programs offered, program availability, and student life. Other factors that are important to me are networking and internship opportunities. I personally would like to attend a public college/university in Kansas, one that was preferably close to my family. However, I am open to attending a non-public college/university. I am also open to attending online school. Is there anything else that I should research, or other factors that I should consider when researching colleges/universities? 2.) How should I go about researching careers? As I mentioned above, I have a wide variety of interests. How should I go about narrowing it down? Are there ways for me to have a first-hand experience of the day-to-day life of different professionals? I don't really want to relocate for my career, so how I can research in-demand careers in my local area? I apologize about the length of this question. I hope I remembered everything! I appreciate any comments or advice that you can offer! Thanks in advance!!

Work Parties: To do or not to do?

I tend towards being somewhat shy and introverted. I'm not a misanthrope, but I find long periods of human interaction draining. This fact is one of the main reasons that I avoided work parties at my old job. The other reason was because I did not like 50% of my coworkers, and the idea of hanging out with them for hours was...well, an unpleasant prospect. I don't believe that not attending these parties damaged my relationship with my coworkers or my career (I don't think anyone noticed my absence, and it was a part-time job). However, I feel that attending work parties at my full-time job would be important for my career/relationships. What would be the consequences if I avoided them altogether? Should I make it a goal to attend at least 1,2,3.... What if I don't like the majority of my coworkers? What if I don't like any of them? Finally, what if my job keeps serving foods which I'm allergic to? Would it be weird if I didn't eat anything?

When deciding what job we want, should we opt for the one that pays more, or the one that you really want that pays little?

For example, I want to be a forensic scientist, but everyone is telling me that their salaries are too low so I shouldn't become one. So, I was thinking that instead, I could become a lawyer, but I don't feel that I would like it. I still have three years of high school left to decide what I wanna do, but its a question I frequently think about.

How to approach finding engineering work after ten years of only being hired for low-skill jobs?

Received master's degree in engineering ten years ago with excellent grades but I have never had a chance to work in the field. I've had to accept zero-education or associate's degree level work just to have any income at all, and I've worked two associates-level jobs for the past six years. I have been applying to engineering jobs frequently since my graduation, but I haven't even had any interviews since 2014. I've done some of Cornell's free online engineering certification courses, that hasn't helped. The career office at the college where I got my associates says my work history of associates-level work has poisoned my prospects and I have no chance of ever getting into engineering. I estimate my application: interview rate is 0.1%. I have checked to ensure my resumes are compliant with the most common applicant tracking software. Beyond that, is there anything I can realistically do to get any attention at all?

How exactly should I choose a career in STEM?

Being in STEM is something that I would love to do however, I am not sure exactly what career I want. I know I want to do something that can help people, possibly work with machinery, and have a really good pay. I hate working in teams and I would rather meet up with people initially to discuss plans and then do my work independently. But, engineering does do a lot of team work so I really need to learn how to be efficient with my time. I have been in multiple STEM programs but one of my favorite projects were creating prosthetic limbs and designing mechanical parts and research. So, I am interested in biomedical engineering but, I am also interested in aerospace. Growing up, I never really had much of an interest in planes but I really like learning about space and different theories or possibilities of what the world can look like billion years from now. I have other interests in career choices such as mechatronics, cyber security, and mechanical engineering. I have talked to other people of how exactly should I choose my career but they would always tell me to, ¨follow your passion¨. But here´s the thing... I don´t have a passion! How exactly can I even choose the right career for me when I don´t have passion and I just like STEM?

Is it better to do your undergrad in mechanical engineering and for grad school, focus on the actual career?

Hello, I am currently a junior and I am preparing for my major and the college that I want to be enrolled in. I am interested in being a part of STEM however I am not sure what I want to do exactly. Some of my career interests include aerospace, biotech, biomedical, nuclear engineer, robotics, genetic engineering, forensic science or criminal justice, and cyber security. I am also planning on double majoring as an economic + STEM. However, since I am not sure what I want to do as a career choice and want to be able to live as confortably as possible, I am planning on getting a degree that is worth my time and money. So, I am currently thinking of majoring in mechanical engineering for my bachelor´s and do my career option for my master´s. Is this a good idea for me or should I only do my associates in mechanical and then focus on my career goals in STEM?

What exactly is work study/How does it work?

I am an incoming freshman who is potentially going to UCSD in the fall of 2022(majoring in Computer Science). Even though my scholarships and financial aid covered everything for me, I still want to have back ups, like having a job or doing work study. Therefore, I want to know how does work study work in UCSD(if not, in general)? Is it worth it? Is it better to get a job/internship or do work study?
