How do I study abroad or go to boarding school without funds?
I would like to do my studies away from home for a while. I don't know how to get scholarships or grants. I have always loved to explore since I didn't get to leave the house much when I was younger. I might qualify for financial aid but that still may make it a bit hard. I would like to have primary coverage or full cover. I want to explore architectural design as well as forensic scenes, criminology, criminal profiling, Cooking, and linguistics. I like freedom but that doesn't mean that I won't listen to rules. I have a GPA of 3.5 and going into my sophomore year of high school.

Hi, I'm interested in working in the publishing industry, so I really want to hear about the personal experiences of professionals in this industry, especially because I'm not sure which specific department I want to work in (e.g. editorial, marketing, production, sales, publicity, etc). If you don't mind, in your response, could you also answer how your department works with the other departments (e.g. as a publicist, how often do you interact with editors, and what do those interactions look like?) and describe what kind of traits are most important for an individual to succeed in your specific department? Can I succeed in business? How can I pick a career that properly suits my interests?
Hello, I'm currently a second-year college student, and I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with my future. I'm currently majoring in English, but I've been debating whether to add business as a second major due to my interest in what I perceive as business-related fields. The only problem is that I'm not confident in my math skills, so I'm wondering how "good" your math skills need to be in order to earn a business degree? I really enjoyed statistics in high school, and I have both statistics and macroeconomics credit already transferred over from high school, but I saw that I would still need to take another math class (precalculus at the lowest level) and microeconomics in order to major in business, and I'm worried that I won't do well in these classes since it's been over a year since the last time I took a formal math class. Anyway, the reason I'm considering adding business as a major is because I have been working a lot of administrative assistant and/or office jobs, and I've found that I actually seem to enjoy doing customer service-oriented office jobs. I especially liked a recent job I had where I got to advise incoming college students on how to adjust to college life and other tips like that. What kind of career could you have where you specifically use your "expertise" or higher knowledge to enlighten/advise less-knowledgeable individuals? Is being a "career coach" one of the only options? As my question says, I'm wondering how successful an English major would be at working in business-related jobs. For example, I'm really interested in the publishing industry. Can you find success working in the publishing industry with only an English degree, or would you recommend double-majoring in business & English (or at least majoring in English with a business minor)? Which is better: continuing to work a job you've grown to dislike because it is advantageous for you career-wise, or finding a new job that you genuinely enjoy?
I've always believed that if you pursue a career you love, then you'll never work a day in your life, so I've followed my dreams and have always planned to pursue my passion, even if it might not result in the most high-paying job. This passion is writing. However, throughout the years, I've discovered that not just any type of writing suits me. I did informal work as a journalist by copywriting for my high school yearbook for my entire four years of high school, and now I’m continuing that type of journalistic work by working as a copy editor and staff writer for my college newspaper. The problem is that I don’t like journalism. I don’t quite hate it, exactly, but I’d much rather be devoting my time and energy into creative writing. I forced myself to do copywriting for all four years of high school even though I disliked it and thought about quitting so many times, mainly because I wanted to have one extracurricular that I had done consistently to put on my college resume. But now that I’m in college, I find myself stuck in the same position—I’m writing for the student newspaper, but I don’t actually like this job because it’s practically identical to my yearbook role. I can’t quite bring myself to just quit so easily because I’ve convinced myself that if I stick with writing for the newspaper for all four years, then it will be good job experience, especially since I want to go into publishing in the future, but do I really want to put myself through yet ANOTHER four years of forcing myself to tough it out in a job that I don’t like? Is it wrong to want to put my mental health and happiness first, even if I know that sticking it out in this job might be more advantageous career-wise? The thing is, I don’t even want to do journalism as my career—I want to work in creative writing or publishing, but I’m trying to be open-minded about all writing opportunities. At the same time, though, I don’t want to get stuck in a career in journalism when that was never what I wanted in the first place. I’m just so stressed and confused about what I should do. When I asked my aunt for advice, she basically told me I was being too naive and that it’s called a “job” or “work” because you’re not SUPPOSED to like what you do in the first place, so she advised me to just stick it out. The whole reason I wanted to pursue a writing job is because I love writing, but the thing is, I’m not enjoying THIS type of writing, and it just makes me think… what was the point of pursuing my passions in the first place if I’m still not happy? Instead of doing journalism, which makes me so unhappy, I might as well have worked toward becoming a doctor or lawyer or something, since I’d be equally as unhappy but they’re higher-paying jobs. What are the real life job equivalences to jobs like in the movie TheTransporter(2002), Drive(2011)? If you haven't seen the movies here's a quick summary of their jobs: - TheTransporter: Main character delivers packages from point A to point B for the mob. He works by a strict set of rules he makes sure his clients understand and agree to beforehand. He gets a destination and a timeframe, how he accomplishes the task though is completely up to him. The rules: #1 Never change the deal. #2 No names--Frank doesn't want to know whom he's working for, or what he's transporting. #3 never look in the package https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90jvl6PzhQQ -Drive: Driver is a highly skilled getaway driver criminals hire to escape their heist jobs. He too, as the transporter, follows a strict set of rules. »You tell me where we start, where we're going, where we're going afterwards. I give you five minutes when we get there. Anything happens in that five minutes and I'm yours. No matter what. Anything a minute on either side of that and you're on your own. I don't sit in while you're running it down. I don't carry a gun. I drive.« https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wk9bz3ieERM Of course I don't expect a job with fancy luxury cars, sharp suits, high speed police car chases and action fight scenes ( a cheap rental , a t-shirt and a leisurely drive will do;)). What I do seek in a job though are some of the qualities these movies portray that speak to me and work well with my personality type (INTJ): -Professionalism: both characters display a high degree of skill,professionalism and attention to detail. They know what their job is(they make sure others know it too) and they do their job as efficiently as possible. (This reminds me of a story this bodyguard told. A VIP politician arrives at location, his bodyguard opens the car door for her, the VIP hands him her purse (or umbrella) as if he is just one of her personal assistants/servants. The bodyguard refuses and proceeds to escort the VIP to her destination. Now he could have just carried her bag for her out of the goodness of his heart, but in event of an attack that might have hindered his ability to react properly. His job wasn't to carry bags, his job was to protect her and that is what he did. Great display of professionalism.) -Autonomy: while they have a boss that gives them jobs, they have complete autonomy on what is the best way to accomplish their tasks. Once they receive the instructions, they work alone. -Lone wolf work: Most of the time they work on their own and their job success does not rely on high social success. In most career tests I don't score well in the Persuasion category making sales/promotion jobs more or less a nightmare for me. -Driving: I love driving, so any job that involves driving cars as a job or driving to a different work location every day is a real joy for me. -Money: They do their job professionally, they get paid well. I almost prefer to get paid by the task opposed by the hour, as long as it's set up in a way where you can actually earn more while not completely rushing through the task making quality and attention to detail suffer. However money is not that important to me, as long as the rest of above qualities are met I'd be willing to lose some on the money side. I had a perfect(not really) summer job like that once. I was doing surveys for this big research/marketing company. I would talk to my boss on the phone once or twice a day only, he would give me all the info, location, what to do, the tools I would need,… I would drive to location (different location every few days) -I enjoyed that a lot. From there I was on my own on how to accomplish the task given. The pay per completed unit was ok as well. Not great, but ok. Perfect right? Not really. The survey sampling was often very restrictive (find x number of age 79-89 people) at a strictly set location(usually a business). That already limited the available target group significantly. From those left I then had to persuade the rest to participate (by default not my strong suit), every time somebody said »No« I was earning precisely zero. Most say no anyway, couple that with low Perssuasion and…All that combined meant I was working 12 hours a day for very little money. Needless to say, I wasn't working there for very long. How do you ask an institution or professional for shadowing opportunities?
I am currently a college psychology student. There is a particular clinical institution that I would be interested in doing some shadowing at. My problem is that I'm not sure how to ask if shadowing opportunities are available when I have no prior relationship with the institution. My target institution does not list contact information for specific staff members. The only way I can contact them is by showing up at their location (which I am able to do), or by phone, which are typically for referrals (this institution mostly provides counseling services.) The reason I wish to shadow is to build a relationship with the institution to allow for a possible future internship. I also would like to experience what some of these professionals do on a day-to-day basis because I might end up liking this area of my major. How do I present myself as a desirable shadowing candidate when I'm going in cold? And how exactly do I ask for this type of opportunity? Should I go to an art college?
Hello, I was wondering if you think it would be beneficial for me to go to an art college? As of right now, I am traditional artist, taking classes at community college, who has an interest in learning more about digital art because of the many opportunities available for people who can create art on a computerized format as opposed to the traditional pencil to paper approach. My only concern is that art colleges are expensive and I also wonder if they are really necessary for improving skills and knowledge because in this day and age the internet provides artists with nearly infinite amount of information about art related subjects. If you do, however, believe that attending art college would help my situation then what kind of art colleges would you recommend for someone who is interested in digital art and what kind of career fields would be open for that kind of an artist? I have completed my chemical engineering degree and I can't seem to find a job. I have been applying from the beginning of my last academic year and have no success. I currently have a lot of family issues and during my undergrad studies it was a bit much to handle none the less I have managed to complete. I was hoping to find a job so that I could be come independent and find my own home and start living a more peaceful and happier lifestyle...however I could not find a job. I was considering to do masters as I heard that it could potentially help you to get a job but it could take up to 2 years which I am not too comfortable with considering I am not happy living at home. Doing masters will keep me busy and they have said that they will be able to pay me some allowance up to R4000 .
